the children of the elderly need to really get involved in their parents medical care. i got a wake up call a year and a half ago when all of a sudden my 80 year old mom took a serious downturn and it was decided on a friday afternoon that she could no longer live alone. the next day, saturday... she was bed-ridden, in my guest room. (i must point out that i worked in a nursing home for years, and i was not alarmed enough by her condition to call an ambulance. we were going to watch her until monday and go to her doctor.)
she was only taking 4 prescriptions daily: a blood pressure pill, a pill for asthma, 4 big arthritis pills, and 3 "dizziness" pills. i read all the side effects and took her off them all that saturday. the side effects were her sypmtoms. she started perking up immediately. huh. by monday morning at the doctors...she had improved and was well enough to walk into the office. i was careful what i said, because he had prescribed all the pills she was taking.
a week later i started her back on her blood pressure pill. and then the asthma pill. when she complains of arthritis, i give her one pill. i threw out the dizzy pills because they were scary with side effects.
after a year and a half, she is sharp as a tack and as well as she ever was. she is a joy to have in my home and i cherish every day with her.
i kick myself for not getting involved earlier. i thought she was able to take care of herself yet. i still dish out her meds, and if she wants so much as a laxative she gets it through me.
