Hi Holly,
Yes I have astigmatism and I paid extra (not covered by insurance) for the toric lenses. I guess maybe having an accurate perscription would be the ideal scenerio.
I had cataract surgery and lens replacement last fall and it was my understanding that my astigmatism was corrected during surgery. I don’t need any readers, but dark restaurant menus and tickets are an issue.
I have Toric lenses also and the eye doc said go to Walgreens or similiar and try the $10.00 readers size 2.50. If that size does not work correctly then go to2.75 or higher. You can try the various sizes on at the store first.
I ended up with 2.75 and they work great. I bought mine when they were on sale buy one get one free.
When I had my cataract surgery I took advantage of an option that for some reason is not talked about very much. The doctor put a lens in my left eye for close up. In my right eye for distance. At age 77 I am fine to drive and read without glasses. I see somewhat better with my bifocals but I would be fine without glasses at all.
I had cataract surgery early this year and my distance vision is 20/20 but reading a book is a little blurry so I will need reading glasses.
My last checkup at the cataract place was this week. I asked them if I needed to go to my eye doctor for a prescription or if I could just go to Wal-mart and get a pair of readers off the shelf. They said I should go to the eye doctor. I just want to double check if this is necessary.
Why pay for a prescription pair when those store readers may fix your vision enough for under $25? I buy mine from Target that have no frame on the lens bottom. They run about $20. I buy a few pairs at once to keep them on hand for if I lose them.
I suggest you start with the 1.00, then go up in magnification if it doesn't work. I just got into the 2.00 after needing them for the last 5 years. The 2.00 used to be way too much.
I ended up going to Wal-mart; tried on a few and settled for the one that was clearest. I didn't buy at wally world- I ordered some light blocking glasses from Zenni.
I'm not sure what type of insurance you have, but as far as I know Medicare pays for your first pair of glasses. Check with your doctor.
This is true
Over the counter readers are great. however, for someone who spends a lot of time reading or on the computer it is always they have one good pair that were made especially for you. Glasses that are made to your specifications taking account your eye placement and where you’re looking through the lens which will make that a more comfortable and better pair of glasses for you.

Medicare has no vision coverage at all if needing to get glasses. Maybe a medicare advantage plan does but not people on regular medicare.
Regular medicare will pay an eye specialist but I'm not sure of what they cover. They covered me seeing a specialist when I had shingles around my eye.
I had cataract surgery in 2017. Medicare AARP. Our eye doctor told me about the "one free pair" immedictaely following the surgery. But, you would have to check your plan to see if Medicare still offers it.

"Medicare doesn’t usually cover eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) helps pay for corrective lenses if you have cataract surgery that implants an intraocular lens. Corrective lenses include one pair of eyeglasses with standard frames or one set of contact lenses.
