Deerflies here in the Midwest, they will dive bomb your head until you let them land for a few seconds, all they need to get a snack. Black flies further North are even worse.
I get them yellow flies around sundown since i am right on the gulf in the salt marsh walt. But only a few times a year. It's the noseeums that are bad.
Last year I caught two of those green flies on my window. We call them poop flies. I pulled the wings off one, tortured him with a cigarette lighter, then put him out of his misery with a rolled up newspaper. I released the other fly outdoors so he could tell his friends of the horrors he witnessed and maybe they would heed his warnings and stay out of my house.
Benadryl is amazing! All kinds of bugs always come after me so I always have Benadryl on hand. Works overnight on me. I've read that bugs are attracted to certain people that have some sort of chemicals, etc. in their body that naturally attract bugs. You could be one of those people.
I'll second benadryl cream for itchy bug bites. The trick is to put the cream on before it swells (if possible) then be aware it will take 10-15 minutes to soak in and help the itch, it isn't an instant form of relief.
If you get the benadryl on bites quickly and don't itch to activate the histamine response, sometimes the welts never come. That said, I don't have much experience with horse flies.
So I've been in the Southeast US my entire life. I've been eaten alive by ants, spiders, mosquitoes, chiggers, sea lice, etc....but nothing comes close to the bites I got in the last couple of days while in Florida. I was attacked by several huge aggressive biting flies that weren't just opportunistic like mosquitoes - but like an attack dog that would not stop and would not stop chasing, and biting my legs.
I was up all night unable to get a minute of sleep because these huge swollen red sores are the itchiest things I have ever dealt with. Imagine the worst itch you've ever had and multiply it by 100. Just doesn't stop. I've tried everything and it looks like hell - like my legs have been blasted with a shotgun. Deep dark red spots the size of quarters. I slathered on 1% hydrocortisone but that doesn't do much.
My question is - is there something to keep these awful things away from me and is there something to put on these bites to make them heal and/or stop itching so badly?
Just another reason to stay the heck out of Florida.
Sorry. Please try colloidal silver. Either in liquid or cream form. Silver Wings is an excellent brand. Works like magic.
Get a jug of pesticide in a trigger-spray container.
Then spend some time carefully watching where those disgusting flies like to hang-out/land. Once you have their hangout-areas figured-out, thoroughly treat those areas with a healthy application of pesticide.
As long as you have a decent pesticide, flies landing on the poison will die rather quickly for the next couple of days.

And so will any other non-target insect that has the misfortune to stumble on your poison patch most likely. Including our at-risk pollinators and harmless bugs that support desirable and beneficial native wildlife. Too many pesticides kill indiscriminately and continue to kill long after they are applied. They persist in the environment. If you don't want to get bitten, put repellent on yourself, not the environment.
Never had any probs with flies sly. Once in a while a small yellow fly with get on my nerves. Only huge fly i know about are them green horse flies. Never had them bother me and i have lived in FL all my life bra.

Ok, we get it. You've said the same thing 3 times in this thread. How is this, in any way, helpful information to the majority of people who do get bit, bro? Which, after all is what the OP was asking about.

In your house, you have all these precious bugs flying around??? Bugs in my house are unwelcome, they will get neutralized.
Pyrethroid-derivatives are not totally safe, but they are a heck of a lot safer than
pesticides of old.
The choice, flies buzzing around in the house and around my head, landing on me....or a careful application of pesticide.......I know what I am going with.
Researchers suspect that house flies can harbor at least 65 illnesses that infect people. Some of the most common house fly diseases transmitted in the U.S. include food poisoning, dysentery, and diarrhea.
