I have been taking Vit D3 2000 for some time now, in a prescription. I had asked my DR if I could just buy it off the shelf....she said no, not the same. I have gotten he VitD refilled several times, always in a prescription bottle. Yesterday I recieved the script in a store bottle, just like the ones you buy off the shelf.. I will be going back there latter on to ask. Just wondering if this is a common practice with them??
My D3 is a script....and has been for a long time.
Specifically why were you prescribed D3? I'd be asking that doc exactly why they say the prescription they wrote is "different" from OTC products. There may be something different about the prescribed formulation other than the IU level involved. Compare all the ingredients of the two carefully. As for the change in the OTC version's container, its possible the pharmacy you got it from now carries different formulations/strengths of D3 than they did in the past.
Vitamin D2 50,000 units requires a prescription, however, vitamin D3 50,000 units does not require one. Although vitamin D3 50,000 units does not require a prescription, it may only be accessible by the pharmacy staff behind the counter. https://www.buzzrx.com/blog/prescrip...0require%20one.

I have been reciecving my Vit D3 2000, by script for along time. They have been calling me to remind me to renew my script.....now all of a sudden, they are just taking it off the shelf. The doctor that prescribed it, said to get it by script not off the shelf. Just would like to hear it from someone in the know.

If the pharmacy is taking off the shelf then the orders comply with such OTC formulations.
As mentioned by Parnassia unless there are specific formulation variables then that quantity of D3 is common OTC. I take D3 1,000. I was told to take 3,000 by my doctor a while ago. Much higher quantities do often require scripts and those quantities are for specific conditions that require constant monitoring and it doesn't sound like you are in that category.
Some insurance companies require a script before they will pay for something and so not sure if that is the case here. Using a script might be cheaper. I don't know if that is the case though as that type of thing changes constantly.

Pharmacy is something tangential to my expertise.
Thanks......appreciate your input.
