My husband has been suffering kidney stones for almost three weeks now. He goes from being intermittently semi-functional, to vomiting, to writhing in pain. He's been to the emergency room, and all they did was give him an MRI (where two were detected), pain meds, and a sieve. When feeling slightly better, he complains of being hungry, but then eating brings on another attack. Going to a kidney specialist is out of the question, because we have no health insurance at this time.
I am at my wits end. I have to go with him to work every day, drive him because of the pain meds, and sit there all day in case he has another really bad attack (we have only one car at this time, and he works on the other side of town).
Is there a diet that dissolves kidney stones? I don't know what to feed him. He was eating a lot of cheese, eggs and mayonnaise, could those have contributed to his kidneys producing the stones? Is there some "magic" food that will break them up really fast, so he will pass them?
Unfortunately, there is no diet or medication that is going to help. By now, I would have expected the stone to have been passed. Has he actually recovered any using the strainer?
If he has a stone that is too large to pass, there are procedures to remove them.
He really needs to see a urologist. I would call around and see if there is one who might work with you on the cost. Do not be afraid to ask for a discount. For example, see if they would accept what they would receive from an insurance company like Blue Cross Blue Shield and let you pay over time. If there is a large teaching hospital nearby, that is a place to try.
Is there a free clinic in your area? If so, they may have a urologist who works with their patients.

I hope he feels better soon.
Thanks for your suggestion. He is again doubled up with pain. I've pushed the urologist issue but he is so stubborn. He's had a history of them and always passed them. He already worked out a payment plan with the hospital for the emergency room visit.
Basically, it seems drinking lots of water and not eating a heavy animal-protein diet (lower the meat eating) are the two biggies...but the link has more info.
Of course, if your husband's stubborn, as you mentioned, he may not be open to making the recommended changes...?
I had a stone lodge in the ureter and burst it. After that experience, I decided that I would not go through that again and did my research. I've been kidney stone free for ten years.
There are different types of stones. For the common ones...
STAY AWAY FROM SODAS WITH PHOSPHORIC ACID. Colas, and especailly diet colas can be a big problem. Look on the can or bottle for the ingredients.
Drink at least 24 oz of DISTILLED water each day. If you sense one starting (there are common pains or twinges that can let you know) drink it exclusively. You can also use corn silk tea to help the process. If your tap water is hard water, you may want to consider switching to distilled in general.
Take a magnesium supplement daily until bowels get a little loose. The calcium/magnesium/phosphorous balance is important. Magnesium deficiencies don't show in standard tests until you are SEVERELY depleted.
DRINK ASPARAGUS SOUP DAILY 1 cup morning & 1 cup eve 4 C water, 1ck boulion, 1pk asparagus cook 20, 30 min til veg is disolved or put in blender put in frig drink daily!
