I know a lady who is 60 working part time at walmart making $1000 per month. Her husband is 66-67 and unemployed. She doesn't have a health insurance. They are green card holders so not getting madicare here in North Carolina.

Her husband broke his shoulder bone and their daughter in law took him to a hospital. The hospital has billed them 6K and they do not have money to pay for that. Now the collection agency keeps on calling them.

Does anyone know how to deal with this prob? Does anyone know abt free / subsidized clinics in Raleigh NC?

Yikes!

You say they're green-card holders; from where did they immigrate? Conditions apply and countries vary, but if their home country has national healthcare, they may be able to use that in place of insurance: we did during our green card years, before my husband's health insurance came through his job.

Otherwise, check your Yellow Pages (or ask a librarian) for local free debt counselling services...is it the Consumer Credit Counselling Services I think, I'm forgetting...

You can also ask the North Carolina Association for Healthcare Access for advice:
North Carolina Association for Healthcare Access .:.

And sometimes, you can request an appointment with the Hospital billing department (this depends on the hospital perhaps) to explain the financial situation at home and work out something.

Hmmm...that's all I'm coming up with for right now, except perhaps to ask a clergyman for referrals; they're good at finding help for folks.

Good luck! You're a good friend to be asking for them.

Tell them to make an appointment with the head of the accounting department and GO DOWN THERE and talk to them about reducing the fee. Hospitals/clinics will usually do this if you ask them. They can set up a payment schedule and pay it off over time. It is no big mystery. The worst thing they can do is ignore this and have the hospital turn it over to a third party collection agency. Then their credit will suffer and they could be sued.

Thats a pity,I greatly feel for them.It reminds me of my time in Germany, there i was checked in rehab with not a penny to pay,but my determination saw a church volunteer to pay my bills.Let them trust God for his providence.
