Do you ladies have problems (like I do) finding sympathetic and caring gynecologists?

I just moved here in May and have had my usual problems with peri-menopause (irregular bleeding). I have this every few years. Each time, at each doctor (I've been through several..) they always have me
1) ready to have surgery straight away
2) ready to milk with various 'treatments'

The last one I went to (first one here in the area since moving) doesn't want to hear my concerns. He just wants me to start the round of TESTS again. He also screwed up my pap, so I have to GO AGAIN to have it done again.

Grrr.

I really don't like how they see you as walking money signs...I realize they have to assess you via tests but at least give me something for the problem or talk to me like a person--don't just leave me hanging there, dreading the next period (last time it was HORRIBLE...4 weeks of flooding).

I'm sorry you're having difficulty right now. It's very frustrating to have ongoing medical issues that don't seem to have a clear solution. Having a doctor who takes the time to answer your questions is important. For most doctors, I really don't think it's that they see you as walking money signs, but that they're very, very busy and it's hard to find that balance between squeezing patients in and asking them to wait 2 months for an appointment. I finally found a wonderful GP who takes the time to answer my questions, but many of the specialists in my area are booked solid. Even after you get an appointment, they're in a hurry.

If you're not happy with the doctor's suggestions, maybe you could do some reading online and try to find out more information and options to bring up? Of course, the internet is not a doctor, but it might give you some alternatives to discuss if you're not satisfied. I'm a little unclear as to what you expect them to do, and maybe they are too. Practicing medicine is (often) taking your best guess with bad information. They can't know 100% what's going on without dissecting you. Some conditions are fairly reliably picked up with tests and non-invasive scans. Others are closer to a guessing game.

For the pap, they changed the preferred method of taking the sample maybe about five years back. According to my gyn (she tells me these things as I'm lying there being probed), the new way gives them more accurate information, but sometimes they don't get the right kind of cells on the first attempt. It stinks (and I've had to go back before too) but if it helps get a better reading, I consider it worth it.
