We all have a choice..and the 50's isn't the end of life. For many it's a beginning. Healthy people don't go to doctors, sick people do. If you want the real deal on changing your life so you don't have to take drugs that never heal you, do research. Go to McDougall Program & Dr. McDougall's Health and Medical Center
Read about transformations. People that have gotten off of so many meds just by following his meal plans. It's all free.
There is so much out there, and there is so much more to life. Do some research on Jack LaLanne. He's in his 90's and still running all over the place. He has more energy than I do! lol
Then there is the raw food movement. Their after photos make them look younger than when they started. Eating all that raw fresh food melts the years away and gets rid of any toxins in your body that causes disease.

Get the book "How to prevent and reverse diabetes." That's cheaper than a doctor visit. For more info, go to Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) - Neal Barnard, M.D., president

I for one quit going to the doctor quite some time ago. I became totally fed up with their methods which always consisted of meds, meds meds and more meds. That's all they know. Meds and surgery. Luckily i never fell for the surgery.
I will never take any of their meds they offer ever again. I now take natural supplements and eat plenty of raw fresh food.

We may or may not be able to help you on this forum..we just offer help in whatever way we know. But it is true that we are the masters of our lives. We choose which path to take and have a choice every day. I do not give much credence to genetics..sometimes it's true, oftentimes it's not. It's just another ploy by some doctors to get more money out of you and your relatives by saying something is destined to happen when it doesn't have to be.
I wish you luck, and take care.

My motivation is not wanting to leave this life, my family and my friends any sooner than I have to. It's taken me 44 years of hard work and good choices to get to where I am today. I plan to spend the next 44 years working hard, making more good choices and enjoying it all. I'll think about after that in a few decades.

Of course not.

I'm close to your age. In my twenties and thirties I was pulling down well over 6 figures doing work that I love.

Now? I live in a one-room apartment and drive a POS car. I haven't been on a vacation since I don't know when. My idea of redecorating is changing the Dollar Store sheets on my sagging bed. I still work 3 jobs and I'm dropping farther and farther behind.

But you know what? No way in Hell am I thinking of doing myself, if only because of spite and stubbornness. And experience. I had a brother who swallowed a 12-gauge, and guess who had to clean it all up because he couldn't afford the 3 grand for the "medical waste removal team"? I spent 2 weeks picking bone and brain out of the walls and furniture.

I won't let anyone do that because of me. Ever.

Now I'm just cruising along with the philosophy of "if you're trying hard, maybe you should kick back and enjoy what you DO have". I've found I can live at a very minimal level - what some would consider poverty - mainly because I don't care at this point whether I live or die. It's a freedom, actually - the realization that whatever happens, you'll be cool with it. It's a breath of fresh air among all the health nuts killing themselves and the docs and pharm companies pushing their snake oil on us. I don't have to buy drugs, medical insurance, check ups - hell, I don't even have a bottle of aspirin.

What I DO have is freedom and serenity and the ability to laugh at everything, and you can't get that if you're dead.

Well, I agree, I cannot afford doctors as I do not have health insurance and more and more companies are not offering it. It is a myth that they have to offer it for full time employment. It is up to the company if they want to...
People who have it don't know what it is like to not have it. They assume everyone has insurance when they say "go to your doctor." Going to my doctor is $100+ for a visit alone. I have shelled out money I didn't have for a torn biceps tendon and when I had pneumonia. Now I have a ton of medical debt to repay.
I am not going to do myself in. My diseases will do that.

I totally agree with that statement, and I would add that healthy people are those who LIVE a healthy lifestyle.

Twix. It seems like you've already done some good things for your health. Just keep going. I'm wondering if you've completed any cleansing programs to undo the damage that resulted from your unhealthy practices ( we all have them to varying degrees ). Here's a link to the website of Andreas Moritz, a medical intuitive, practitioner of Ayurveda, Iridology, Shiatsu and Vibrational Medicine. Check it out. You might find something of interest.

Good recommendation NewAge, I have one of his books, still want to read some others. I have spent a lot of time reading his forum on CureZone as well, although he doesn't post there anymore the archives have a lot of useful information. I'm a big proponent of cleansing the major organs.

Twix you are not alone here. I don't have all my stuff out here on the forum for everyone to read, but I can tell you that there are plenty of people "our age" struggling. I don't have health insurance either and at the moment I am racking up some pretty hefty bills. And how am I going to pay those medical bills? With my house, most likely. Now that's pretty sad. But good lord, I'm surely not going to let it take everything from me. It can't have my sanity or my optimism. So when you start telling everyone how unfair life is for you, I think you need to look at the whole picture. Times are unfair for a whole lot of people right now. And it's not aimed at you, it's not personal. But what you do with it is. If you want all these things to take you down, then it will.

Life isn't about all the cr*p you can buy, what car you drive, or who has what, or who goes where. Who cares. But how you wake up every morning and how you look at life in general is important. You need to find a better perspective. Right now you are looking through negative eyes. I'm sorry, but I mean to say this in a kind way. I hope that's coming through to you. I wish you well.

And do you want to know my philosophy, "Any day I wake up, is a good day!" http://bestsmileys.com/lol/5.gif (broken link)

Twixcookie, I think I 'get' what you're saying and I'm kind of on the same path, too.

I have made lifestyle changes in diet and exercise and also don't want to get hooked on multiple medications. My course is kind of middle path..I take one medication for my blood pressure, exercise daily (most of the time), avoid salt and limit my caffeine and keep my weight down. Despite this, my blood pressure is still high, but not extremenly so.

My doctor would like me to take more medication(s) for my blood pressure but I've read recent studies about many instances where blood pressure lowering is resistant to multiple medications and then there are those wonderful side effects to consider...not my path, not my choice.

What's helped me most is yoga...my instructor has taken my blood pressure reading before and after an hour of yoga and the difference is astounding...I'm beginning a meditation/deep breathing routine which she thinks will help, too.

I must say that I feel very healthy and there's joy in my life. Simplicity is key, for me.

If I might make a recommendation, it would be to seek out a holistic or naturopathic medical expert/doctor and see if they can formulate/recommend supplements you might take. Trying on your own and not sticking with it isn't the ticket--some of the results can take months to be experienced. And since your body's chemistry is unique, you might need different supplements in different combinations and strengths than some one else..it's not a cookie-cutter approach like "take these pills 4x/day for 10 days."

Herbal remedies are more subtle and slower-acting than the very strong Western pharmaceuticals.

Perhaps your resistance is the same as mine--I just want to support my health in a natural way rather than the pharmaceutical path...each of us has our own belief system when it comes to our health.

For instance, my MIL has been plagued with very high blood pressure for many years now..she takes 8-9 medications daily and had a recent pace maker installed--and she's soon to be 90 years old. She's living, yes, but is it life? Her life centers around doctor's visits and tracking her Medicare payments and bills.

Each of us must answer our health question and support on our own, eh? Not an easy solution or decision to make.

Genetics is a curious subject.

If I follow the pattern of my parents I will drop dead of a massive heart attack somewhere in my mid 70's.

If I follow the pattern of my father, mom's sister, two older brothers, and few others, I am a raging alcoholic. Well, actually I am, I just refuse to let it rule my life. Some days it's easy some days, well that's one Hell of an urge. I drink, but my wife has standing orders to tell me if I'm drinking too much. If she does I treat it just like I did cigarettes - cold turkey. I can go through some rough days, but I keep images of other family members in my mind. That is one heck of a deterrent. Hasn't been necessary for a couple of years. I think I have it figured out.

If I follow the pattern of my siblings (with the exception of one brother who finally quit drinking, had ten years and acquired asbestoses - Lasted 13 months) I will stay healthy until at least 80.

We all have hearing loss. Some of us have Tinnitus. Knees and hips seem to be weak spots for all of us. We all wear reading glasses except my sister. She has Retinitis Pigmentosa.

I am the only child with Restless Leg Syndrome, but I am also the only one that had Polio. My mother also had Polio, in the same leg and it caused the same twist in my spine as it did in hers.

There are probably other similarities/differences, but being the baby I still (at age 60) don't get told everything.

A long story I won't go into here, (well, it seems I did!) but there is a yeast enzyme that seems to work in some pretty miraculous ways. Retinitis Pigmentosamade me think of it. My wife and I took this stuff one winter and it was the first one in years that we didn't catch a cold or flu. We forgot last year and I was sick for over two months. I'm taking it this year.

Here is the page on the site where we bought it. Prices, articles, etc.

Welcome to Vitamin Research Products

The reason RP reminded me of this is that the company that made cattle feed additives is where it's properties were discovered. The discovery was made because auditors came to the company and noticed that the office personnel went to the doctor as often as the rest of us. The manufacturing personnel pretty much never went. Upon further investigation it was discovered that one of the employees in the plant was an identical twin. He and his sister were both diagnosed with RP. He went to work for this company shortly after that. After 20 (?) years his sister is almost completely blind. His eyesight hasn't changed since the diagnosis.

Here's a page about it. With hype, but basically true.

You've missed my point entirely. I know enough about medicine, I work in it. I am saying I don't know if it is worth doing all of this to gain a few years. So you give up the burgers, the Twizzlers, the apple pie...for what, a few more years?
