I fell and landed on my fist. I have a rather large bump on the back side of my hand now and it is pretty painful. Since its sunday I will wait till tomorrow and see if its better and if not I'll go to the doctor. I'm not looking for a diagnosis just someone who has experienced a broken hand who can describe it.
Thanks
You can always ice it for the first 24 hours or so, elevate it above the level of your heart, protect it from further injury, and use over the counter pain meds (tylenol, ibuprofen, naproxin) for it. I'd stay away from the aspirin and too much NSAIDS because these can increase the bleeding/bruising in the area.
Is there an obvious deformity (beyond the swelling, that is? Did you hear a snapping or popping sound when you injured it? If so, it's possible that you *may have* broken something or had a severe sprain or strain.
I just broke a finger in 5 places playing volleyball - worst pain of my life tied with a scratched cornea. Can you move your hand? Usually when you break something the pain is going to be excruciating, but it certainly could be broken, or of course just sprained.
You could have also fractured a bone in your hand. You need to get to the doctor for and xray asap! I fractured two bones in my left hand (while driving of all things) and it swelled up until it looked like a Virginia Ham. Stupidly I waited four days to go to the doctor. I had to see a hand specialist and wear a splint for five weeks. Please get it checked out ASAP!

I hope it feels better soon.
There is a large knot on the back of my left hand by the wrist on the bone that connects to my ring finger. With how sore it is and the fact that I can barely grip with that hand I think it is broken.

Five places? Ouch lol. I sprained some fingers pretty bad playing football in high school but I've never heard of a sprained hand. Were you playing indoor volleyball or beach vb? I use to love to play.
From the description of how you injured yourself and where the deformity is, you very likely have a metacarpal fracture either 4th or 5th.
You should get an xray and preferably see a hand specialist. Most common treatment is casting or bracing for around 4 weeks. If there is a significant displacement or angulation to the fracture you could need at the very least a reduction of the fracture and possibly surgery to maintain the reduction, pinning or plating of the fracture

In college, a friend and I were just practicing one day and the ball sort of landed on my finger and crushed it straight down. We just did "intramural" volleyball with other dorms. Kind of the bottom of the totem poll for sports lol. The finger still isn't quite right and it's been, ahem, several years.

Back when I was still young enough to play football I fell hard during a practice and landed oddly on the outside knuckles of my right fist... Never felt any searing pain or heard any noise, just a moment of concern as things felt "weird". I kept playing for a few weeks and every day after practice it would swell terribly and become rather painful, seemed worse and worse with time. I finally caved and had an X-ray. My 4th metacarpal bone (behind the pinky finger) was broken almost cleanly in two. It was getting more and more painful because the broken pieces were starting to pinch tissue between the shards of bone and the next metacarpal. The doctor set it (uncomfortable), gave me some pills, ordered a brace made to wear in practice and games, patted me on the fanny and sent me back to practice. I have broken other bones and never been in any doubt about whether it was broken or not. There's just something about those outside metacarpals that doesn't exactly scream "I'm f*cking broken!" like a fibula does.
It sounds like you are describing a very similar injury. Sorry, I'll bet a c-note it's a break.
My left hand, my 3rd finger from the lift, feels like its broken. if I leave it alone, don't try to straighten it, an let it keep its natural curve, it doesn't hurt. It hurts from the large knuckle to close to the wrist. I didn't do anything that I remember. Wow is it painful. Any ideas? I remember using a large hammer and pounding with my right hand. But not my left. Gee, I didn't do any thing to acerbate this pain in my left hand. If I try to close or open my hand it feels like I smashed my knuckle with a hammer.
