Hi Everyone.
i received some sad news about a very good friend of mine who's neice at 18 had a heart attack due to a leaky heart valve. no signs she just collapsed. her heart was stopped for about 2 minutes. they got to her right away. she was on her first day of college. she is still in a coma as of today.this happened over a week ago. the drs say her brain scans look well no damage she should come out of it but when is the question. today she is running a high fever and heart rate is high. they were to do a feeding tube and a trachiotomy today. does anyone have any experience from this and what can we expect. i know everyone is different but maybe just knowing someone else went through it may help.. please say a prayer for this beautiful young girl.
thank you

Does she have an infection? That could explain why she has a fever and maybe the heart problems. I'm not a doctor, but I have a leaky valve and they told me I have to be careful about getting an infection in my heart. When I go to the dentist, I have to take a large amount of antibiotics to prevent this. As far as coming out of the coma, it's a waiting process. Hopefully, they will be able to get her heartrate under control with medication. For now, all you can do is pray!

They changed the rule for antibiotics before dental work (http://www.ada.org/public/topics/antibiotics.asp - broken link).

I have mitral valve prolapse and take Toprol so my heart doesn't work as hard, and I very seldom have irregular beats. Right now, my pulse is about 52/min.

They originally thought I had MVP. I have the same symptoms. It is actually pulmonic stenosis which causes a leaky valve. I know they changed the amount of AB to take, but I didn't know they are now saying not to use AB.

Back with the op, did you find anything else out? How is the girl doing? I hope better!

Yes, a very sad day. For some reason the loss of girls hits harder than the boys. I'm very sorry.

I don't know who she, or you are, but I have a daughter. I can't imagine the pain. You and your relatives are in my thoughts and prayers.
