My grandmother had a stroke 2 years ago she has right side paralysis she then was Diagnosed with throat cancer went through radiation and chemo and did great in between there she went into the hospital and she was fine one day and the next day she started pulling out her ivs and yelling and screaming and then they had to intibate her and when she came off she was good she was back to herr normal self. It was very random she was not normaly like that and no one had an answer as to why she did that. Now that happened again after she had surgery on her throat she aspirated then it turned in numonia then she did the samething with pulling out her ivs and such things her temp was 103 I know that causes some confusion and stuff but I don't think this bad. They had to intibate her again and she has been on that for 5 days breathing at 50% and the machine is breathing at 50% but now they want to put a trache in to help her breath better and help her with the secreation in her throat. I am her health care proxy and I am stuck right now she is only 69 years old. I do have an appt with all her dr. tomorrow to get all the information but I am really stuck because I don't want to make a bad decission. Please help me thank you for reading my post... terri

Make sure you ask any and every question you have the nurses, Dr.'s until you understand what they are saying is all I can say to you.
I don't think you will make a bad decision relax. Good Luck to you and your grandmother.

I am not exactly sure what you are looking for but her odd behavior reminded me of what happened to my son when he was a burn patient. He sort of went besirk, pulling out his lines, talking out of his head, and acting strange. They reviewed his medication chart and discovered someone had added steroids to his medications and that was when the problem started. He had a bad reaction to the steroids. They may need to look at her ALL medications and see if one of them could be causing her odd behavior.

It's entirely possible for a fever, along with the pneumonia (which decreases the amount of oxygen her brain is receiving) to cause this. We see this a LOT in older patients, patients with strokes, and patients with pneumonia. Your grandmother has all three factors in play here.

You need to talk to her primary doctor in the hospital and find out what's going on. Aspiration pneumonia is a chemical pneumonia: the acid from the stomach contents is vomited up and then breathed in and that damages the delicate lung tissue.

You need to sit down with the doctor: get an idea of what your grandmother's overall prognosis is. Is she going to be able to live independently? Will this keep happening over and over? Will she need permanent intubation? What is the status of her cancer? You need to get a feel of the quality of life your grandmother is likely to have and make your decision from there.
