I use generic Unisom because of my constantly rotating shift work. Every week is a different shift. 11pm-7am Tues-Mon, two days off, 3pm-11pm Thurs-Wed, two days off, 7am-3pm Sat-Thurs, four days off then start rotation all over again. What I find really helps is exercise. If I remember to take the stairs at work then it's easier for me to fall asleep and stay asleep. I sometimes wonder if our nation's sleep problem is from a lack of physical activity.
I have tried all the OTC sleeping medications and they don't work for me. Most have Benadryl in them which gives me restless legs. I was on Ambian - generic name Zolipidem, a prescription drug, which worked. My doctor took me off of it , and put me on Temazepam. It doesn't work well and also is very dehydrating. I've had to resort to buying at an overseas pharmacy and it costs a lot. Senior citizens especially have a lot of pain and sleep problems which can often only be controlled by opiate medications. The government is now getting involved and telling doctors they need to cut down on prescribing controlled substances. What's next? Move to Mexico or Latin America?
I use OTC Aleve-PM and it works just fine. Within an hour the arthritis pain abates and the sleep drowsy kicks in.
