Hormones play a key role in healing. I had problems in my back after surgery and needed to go on female replacement hormones to promote bone growth. Also make sure you are getting enough calcium in your diet..

Default TIBIA/FIBULA fracture

hi, Im a 44 year old man. On july 17 2011 i was in a motorcycle accident. when they brought me to the hospital i was in surgery within the hour.when i came to after surgery i had received a external fixator on my left lower leg. i had to stay with that for 7 days till swelling went down then i went into surgery again to fix my leg. I was told surgery should be about 3 hours. I was in for 7. I ended up with 3 plates on my tibia and 2 on my fibula 26 screws altogether ,also had to have a bone graft . I stayed in hospital for 3 days after surgery .The doctor casted me the day they let me out ,very painfull, they had to bend my foot up and hold it till the cast set.
In 3 weeks the doctor removed cast ,sutures had exrays taken, and then recasted my leg. another 3 weeks had cast removed xrays taken, no union showing yet .doctor put me in a boot for 6 weeks no weight bearing . another 6 weeks xrays again still no union, back in boot another 6 weeks no weight bearing ,going to pt 3 times aweek at this point. working on range of motion of ankle, leg strength . upper body getting strong from the cruthes
next visit with doctor he says he sees some union, he tells me to start weight bearing. I start weight bearing exercises at pt. leg is vey week I show some progress and then everything thanges. I first developed pain in foot, like i had a rock in my shoe, very painfull .Then i got pain in my left knee the pain got so bad that just to touch it would send me to the moon. range of motion in knee was getting worse to.
went back to doctor and he orderd a mri of knee . was hoping for a torn meniscus but not so lucky. Came back with possible spontaneous necrosis .not what i want. Doctor put me back on non weight bearing for another 3 weeks.
next visit with another doctor He told me it could possibly be transient osteoperosis brought on by trauma. better option to me. necrosis means knee replacement osteoperosis can heal with time.
Well today is 2/29/2012 and im now on partial weight bearing knee is better than it was but still not right when i try to weight bear my knee is ok for a couple hours then i have to get off it same with my ankle a couple hours thats it .pain in my foot is gone though, thats good Ialso have lost alot of muscle in my left leg
Well after 7 months im still in alot of pain. Has anyone gone through this? I would like to hear your story. Im hoping that with time it will get better . Also not working for 7 months is hurting. trying to get on ssd but it takes forever.

I broke my fibula in half and my tibia broke in half and shattered. This happened on march 17th when I fell down the stairs at my apartment when I got home from the bar on st Patrick's day. It's was late 3 in the morning but my sister and my boyfriend took me to the hospital. I had surgery 2days later but before that they had to give me delaudlin for the pain. They put a plate with 8 screws on my fibula and two pins with a bunch of wire in my tibia. Two weeks the cast came off and then I wore a boot I took 2 prescriptions 50 counts each of percocet 10s and then I was done and took Advil.i thought I could start walking on it without physical therapy but I was to scared it would hurt so I didn't kinda a mental block thing. I had been walking on it in the boot and that was fine and the doctor said I could start walking on it. So I went to the pt nothing we did really hurt that bad so that day when I left I took the boot off and have been walking on it since. That was 2 weeks ago on the June 1st. It's still stiff and it swells up a bit when I've been on it for a while but the aching is from the muscles and tendons that where torn and haven't been used in a couple months. The only way to fix it is to work hard and get over the mental stuff that makes you think it hurts more than it does. Kinda like the first time you hold a baby you think it's so breakable but it's a lot sturdier than you think. My advice is do the pt and have someone there to make you do it or tease you till your motivated to get it done. Or even just think about all the weight you have gained from sitting on your ass for 2 months. That motivated me.
