I had a hysterectomy when I was 37 - what a relief! I did keep my ovaries and took soy isoflavones when I went into menopause at 50 (easy, short menopause). The first few days after the operation is no fun, but I rebounded quickly. You need to rest and not be on your feet too much the first few weeks. It really changed my life for the better - think positive, know that your life will be better, that the temporary discomfort will quickly be replaced by better health and vitality.
sorry I disagree on so many levels. Ovarian cancer is a killer of too many women! Why keep the ovaries and risk that?
BTW-my sex drive went into overdrive after removal of mine and it's still in overdrive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A vaginal hysterectomy IS major surgery. I chose to have an abdominal hysterectomy, but could've easily had the other and the cervix is not left behind after either procedure. The recovery time after a vag hys is less, supposedly, but everyone is different. I would imagine that you would feel so much better given what you are experiencing now. I had no issues with sexuality afterwards - what a relief!!!!! No pregnancy worries.
Here is a balanced article on whether or not to keep your ovaries. I believe that unless your ovaries are diseased, keep them - especially if you are younger, as I was when I had my hysterectomy. I think that letting the body take care of your hormones instead of taking artificial hormones makes sense in some cases. There are pros and cons depending upon your personal health.

Ovaries are useless once the womb is gone..........that is my truthful opinion. I've known too many women die from ovarian cancer; too many friends die from that cancer, to believe they are worth that once you decide no more kids.

Ovaries are not useless once the womb is gone - I don't think you read the article. I was 37 - still producing hormones through my ovaries - hormones that would have had to be artificially introduced into my body had I not had my ovaries. In some cases, doctors do recommend you keep your ovaries. No cancer in my family, no ovarian disease. Natural is better.
also Brokencrayola, this is what my doctor explained to me:Even with the ovaries not removed, the blood supply to the ovaries lessens after the surgery and the ovaries usually cease functioning within 1-3 years.
Hence-all the more reason to have them removed.
