My Dad is 85. He's always been pretty active, in fact he drove from NC to NJ in May without any problems. Since his return he came down with a bad cold that has really knocked him for a loop. Today the doctor ordered a chest xray, and they saw a suspicious spot on his lung. Chances are, he has cancer, but the spot is small, and should be handled ok with surgery.
The doctor seems more concerned about his weight loss. He has no appetite at all anymore. He won't drink anything thick, like Ensure. I'm looking for some high calorie options that might tempt him, even in small amounts. Any suggestions?
The cancer patient diet..everything fatty, delicious, and all of his normal favorites. In small quantities, until he can get his appetite back.
I lost my appetite for a different reason, but a few spoonfuls of ice cream before a meal helped my appetite. Grilled cheese sandwiches I could keep down, and for some reason chinese food. But all in small amounts, and I had to be told to eat. French fries, cheesesteaks, pizza, greasy junk food essentially settles well. Think of anything you'd eat to feel better after a hangover.
Butter, sugar, and sauce everything. Cream sauces work well. Milk instead of water. Peanut butter on toast. Sugared almonds.
The point is to get calories in, and worry about substance later.
And i really don't intend to be provocative here but this is the kind of issue that marijuana addresses.
And it's a shame that people have such a misunderstanding about it and that the law is so against it.
It's an excellent appetite stimulator and it also treats nausea very effectively.
There are many people who have cancer who obtain a medical marijuana license to help them cope with those two symptoms.
If your fathers condition does not change or if it worsens and if he is open to it, you may want to consider this option at some point.
I don't know what state you live in but it may be possible if various factors are in your favor ... namely what state you are in and whether or not your dad is open to that treatment.
Given that he's 85, it's quite possible that he wouldn't be but you never know.
Many older people, that wouldn't ever consider smoking marijuana before their illness, use it to cope with their condition and are very glad and grateful for it.

Whatever you do DON'T GIVE HIM ENSURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
READ THE LABEL! Corn syrup is the first item listed and all the sugars including corn syrups just FEED CANCER! You need to ELIMINATE all sugars from his diet including sweet fruit which will STARVE the cancer.
Search my other posts using "Cancer, diet" and "Macrobiotics" as keywords for what he needs to do and for various links and resources.
I have a family member that is on chemo and the doctor gave him marijuana PILLS because he is loosing weight so maybe you could ask your doctor about that?
My Mom didn't eat, just a couple of bites for breakfast, lunch and supper and the doctor gave her a pill to help with her appetite so you could ask the doctor about something to stimulate her appetite. I always made Mama her favorite deserts as she would eat those all day... whatever it takes to get them to eat!
I also use to make her milk shakes (small ones) and she would always drink those and I used the most fattening things I could to make them with.
You can get the same effect as 'loco weed' without breaking the law by getting him on Remeron or something similar. My psychiatrist friend uses it in the elderly when they need to put on weight.

I don't know what Remeron is but there is a huge difference between a plant and a prescription drug.
And, if her father is in a state where medical marijuana is legal, there would be no law breaking involved.
Legalize it!
It's been so demonized. What a shame.
one of my customers at the farmer's market was buying two dozen eggs a week and frying them up in butter each day for her father who had cancer and wouldn't eat anything much.
Thank you for all the suggestions. My father lives in NC. I'm not sure if medical marijuana is permitted there or not. At this point his doctor doesn't want to prescribe anything to perk up his appetite. She thinks he can gain weight with a bit of effort on his part. He hates anything thick, like a shake. I will suggest the fried eggs as a start, he's always liked those.
