Perhaps fellow sinus sufferers can help answer this...
I've had a sinus infection for about ten days now. It started as a fever and after that went away I was blowing mucus that was yellow and then turned green. I was prescribed Amoxicillan. I'm still taking it and have two days left of pills. The mucus is now clear but there's still some sinus pressure and congestion remaining. This is to be expected, right? I'm flushing with a neti pot several times a day, drinking tons of water, and taking mucinex and sudafed. Not really much else I can do except wait, huh? Why do sinuses take so long to clear out! I was hoping the antibiotics would solve the problem but I guess that only gets you halfway there.
What's interesting is that every time I've got a sinus infection, the inflammation must be treated with nasal steroids eventually. Does anyone else have the same problem? I've never had the infection completely go away. I always need to call in and get back on Nasacort. The only problem is that it takes so long to take effect.
What can I do to treat the inflammation BESIDES rinsing my nose repeatedly and drinking lots of water?
Also, are neti pots meant to leave your nose feeling so dry? What can I do to prevent that?

When we moved to Florida, I suffered from sinus infections and chronic congestion. I started taking Grapefruit Seed Extract (I had taken it before for breastfeeding thrush), and wow, what a difference it made! I'm not sure if you can take it in conjunction with an antibiotic, but I do know that it can help with thrush/yeast problems caused by antibiotics. Start off slowly with it... if you immediately take it three times per day, it can upset your stomach. And if you are taking any other medications, ask a naturopath about contraindications (your medical doctor probably wo'nt know either way and will just say "be safe and don't take it," but a naturopath will know if it is safe to take with whatever else you may be on).

My sinus infections never seemed to go away. They had me on every kind of steroids and then fatique set in. I finally went to an ENT specialist and they did a ct scan ans sure enough cavity was restricted. I had endoscopic surgery 10 days ago and I have not felt this good in 20 years. It does take a week to recover.

I had that surgery in 1996 and that nostril/side has never been stopped up since! It was awesome. I could actually feel air moving through my nostril when they removed the packing. Wish the other side was bad enough to get my doc to do it, too, but he says it isn't. I get congestion on that side all the time.

It takes so long to drain because it is such a small area. I've been so congested at times that my hearing is affected in at least one ear to the point it sounds like I am under water. Keep taking that mucinex (should be the D kind). When it is really bad I take 1 mucinex every 6 hours and it really seems to help tremendously because I've always got some of it in my system. Drink lots of water.
