I had a mammogram last week and received a call from the imaging center today that there were "densities" and they want me to come back for an ultrasound. I have had a normal mammogram two years ago. Is this just a formality or is "densities" code for a real problem? How worried should I be. My US appointment is in three days.

they always detect density in one of my breasts; then I have the ultrasound. Nothing ever shows up as a potential problem.
It used to freak me out-now I expect it.

I had to go back for a second one last year. They are just being cautious. Be glad you don't live in England.

I would imagine they are just being cautious. Just try not to worry, I know this can be easier said than done. Let us know how it goes.

This happens a lot. Normally it is not a problem, but rather be on the safe side.

All is well - had the "diagnostic mammogram" (what in the heck is a regular mammogram if this one is to diagnose something?!?) which was really just a regular mammogram with extra squishing. They followed that with an ultrasound. I was told all was perfectly OK and I don't need to come back for a year.

Shew... and thanks for the advice, all.

A "diagnostic" mammogram is one that requires more images than the regular one.

I was so glad to find this thread on a search. I too got a call to come back for additional tests and possibly and ultrasound because they found more density after comparing to the last one.

I'm glad it worked out for you PineTreeLover, I'm hoping will be just as good as your news

Smile How long for results ?

This thread is extremely old, but couldn't find a more current one, so I am reopening...

I am 46, have had mammograms since I was 39, but skipped last year because my child was sick & I just never rescheduled, shame on me, I know...
Any time in the past, I have been given my results right away, one even being called in for an ultrasound. All was fine.
This time, I went to a different breast center & the technician just said I would be called or notified of my results in the mail?
I have never had this before & it quite honestly has me freaked out!
I went last week ( Thursday) today being Tuesday, I haven't heard anything yet.
I would like to think if there was a concern, I would have been called by now, but then a woman I know from school said she heard 9 days later that her mammo was abnormal & they wanted more pictures done.
I have high anxiety as it is, but medical issues can cause me to lose sleep & dwell on them, which has brought me to this!

So, my ? Are; do you get results right away ? And if not, how long does it take, even if something is suspicious?

Thanks n advance...

Never suspicious finding but got results by mail maybe 10 days later.
