I have had more than one person suggest that I might need to have my thyroid checked to see if it is functioning properly.
I have never had this done before and I would like to know what it entails before going to the expense of seeing a doctor. I am not interested in any testing that involves needles.
Can anyone who has had this done, please tell me what the procedure is?
mine andmy daughter's thyroid levels are done by taking blood. I know of no other way. Sorry................
the needles are so sharp you can barely feel the prick. Of course I can say that because needles don't bother me.

You get your blood drawn, and they do what is called a TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) test. This will tell if your thyroid is under or overproducing hormones. I am sorry but it does involve a needle but if your thyroid isnt functioning properly you could get really sick. You can get a goiter on your neck, your eyes can bulge out of your head. I had a friend who was producing too much hormone and because it regulates your metabolism hers was going to fast which made her organs overwork. So it really is important to get your thyroid checked. If you are not producing enough hormones it would cause you to have no energy and cause weight gain
You really need to have a blood test. I understand your dislike of needles, but most labs today do it so quick and painless that it really would be to your benefit. Some symptoms that you can look for are: Body temp significantly below 98.6. Mine can be as low as 94 but with meds it now hovers around 97; thin hair where you can see your scalp; look at your neck. If it is enlarged then you probably have thyroid issues; extreme thirst, cold, tired; high blood pressure without family history.
There is a whole panel of lab tests, not just TSH, although that is the one that is commonly done. T3, T4, thyroglobulin, free T3, and something else, I think. And the blood draw may or may not hurt, depends on how easy your veins are to find. Talk to your doctor before worrying about it.

Well surely you have a physical every year, and you have blood drawn for that, right? It's no biggie.

No, I do not. I do not allow anything invasive to be done to my body. It looks like I am just going to try a kelp supplement and see if that is helpful.
