Pinched nerve, anyone had one? (MRI, cysts, x-rays, back pain)

It feels like someone stabbed me with an icepick and broke it off in my back in the shoulder area, comes and goes. I've been to several wingnuts who are supposedly doctors and been presrcibed:
Skelaxin ( some relief but very expensive)
Lyrica ( a worthless drug that had no results)
Naproxen ( some mild relief)
Vicodin (this did the trick, but it's like pulling teeth to get a script)
Ultram ( might as well eat M&M's)

I had numbness in my left hand caused by a pinched nerve. My x-ray showed nothing and my doctor, a specialist in sports injuries, said I really didn't want him to poke around looking.
He sent me to another specialist who did tests of the nerves themself. This involved sending electrical impulses up the nerve pathways and timing how long it took. Again everything looked good.
Then he made a simple suggestion. Correct your posture. Back up to a car (or something really heavy) and grip it under the fender. Try to pick it up. This will pull your shoulders back and strengthen the muscles.
It worked. This was over 20 years ago and I keep up the exercise.
Your situation is likely not the same but pain killers weren't the answer for me and might not be for you either.
I had one. Was a nerve in the urinary tract, it was pinched between several non-cancerous cysts. It was extremely painful, basically felt like a red hot iron being shoved up your butt and coming out your penis, really REALLY REALLY bad.
The condition persisted for almost two years until properly diagnosed and the cysts were removed surgically. No problems since.
It will work itself out eventually, but in the meantime you could try a chiropractor. I had really good results with one with both a pinched nerve in my lower back and one in my neck area. Both times x rays were taken. I also have to say that since I started working out at a gym three years ago I have had things like this flare up a heck of a lot less!
a pinched nerve will not show up on an x-ray. I have had a pinched nerve in my neck. an mri will show the discs in the neck/spine bulging and possibly contributing to the pinched nerve. a chiropractor and physical therapy, along with some muscle relaxers/anti inflammatories are probably a good course of action.

It took about 2 weeks before I could even see a doctor (specialist) and was diagnosed by him just by pushing on my arms (resistance). He gave a prescription of Valium for two weeks (I think) and it made all the difference in the world. Worked right away for me. Occasionally I still can feel it if I over exhort myself (especially painting ceilings for me).
I have same answer as stillkit,now 76.
Awhile back doctor said for some persistent back pain which I have had since age 30 or so from work,take 2 aleve morning and night for a week,it made my blood pressure sky high 174/90,normal 128/36.This happened after only 2 days. I was at doctors office for another problem and mentioned back pain.
Generic Advil works fine.I never tried Aleve before.

Just an update and thanks for all posters replies. I finally had to go to ER and was given prescriptions for Vicodin and Valium and it keeps me comfortable during the day but the pain can still overwhelm these drugs when I try to go to sleep. It's a tough condition to treat because nerve problems seem to not appear in MRI's and Xrays.
Seems the chiropracter worked for a lot of you, so I'm going that route.
