If you read the article, there are a lot of caveats about tofu. One thing not mentioned was that the current elderly people grew up in a time when nutrition due to poverty was poor. Called cohort effects.
Also note the comment about formaldehyde.
I don't think we have much to worry about at this point!
I think the key line in the article (which I did read) is this:
She also stressed that there was no suggestion that eating tofu in moderation posed a problem.
Since that statement probably covers 99% of the people who eat tofu, I really don't think this is an issue. Also (since this thread was started in the Vegetarian forum), vegetarians/vegans eat much more than tofu. In fact, tofu is often just a tiny part of one's diet, with grains, greens, fruits and nuts having a much more important role.
There is often formaldehyde in beer, melanin in milk, etc etc
If tofu was a problem, dont you think most of Asia would be suffering from the effects? It is eaten far more there than in the west and there are probably fewer regulations as to how it is produced. Really, we have to use some common sense when reading newpaper and article junk like this. There are these scare stories about every food that is not picked from an organically grown plant and eaten straight away.
