The only way the flu can spread from your hands into the body is through the nostrils, eyes or more rarely, the mouth.
Unless you are downwind of someone sneezing or coughing, just training yourself to not touch anything above the neck works remarkably well at prevention.
I am not sure what washing hands has to do with your contacts. If you are talking about using your finger to get out or put in your contacts, I would imagine you only do that once a day at the most. Just make sure you wash your hands good before you do. Hand sanitizer is good to carry around. I would not put Lysol on my hands.
I've been wearing contacts for about the last 14 years. I don't see the big deal. Here's my routine:
In morning when getting ready for work, I of course wash my hands right before putting them in.
Then, when I get home at the end of the day several hours later, I wash my hands like I always do when I get home anyway & take them out & put them back in the lens case.
Repeat the next day.
Throughout the day, I'm not touching my eyes/eyeballs to where I would get my contacts infected. I wash my hands throughout the day like the average person after using the restroom & before eating lunch, etc. Very rarely do I have to resort to that anti-bacterial hand gel during the day, but I do keep a pocket-sized bottle on me. I'm close enough to a restroom to walk to it and actually wash my hands well.
You can keep a canister of alcohol wipes in your desk/car if you don't have access to a restroom for a long time.
I don't get it either. I put my contacts in right after I get out of the shower.
