Washington, D.C. (AHN) - A safety alert has been issued for a device worn around the neck that enables users to push a button to summon emergency assistance to their homes because it poses a choking hazard resulting in serious injury or death.

Philips Lifeline has issued the safety alert for its Lifeline Pendant Personal Help Buttons, according to a statement by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

quote: It was intentionally designed not to break off easily so people wouldn't lose it. However, FDA officials warn that it can become entangled with other objects worn around the neck and cause choking.

I hope this doesn't scare people away from them. They really are life savers.

Sorry to bump up something so old, but I'm looking for more info about the Philips Lifeline service. I want to get it for my mom, who is 85. She fell last week and is in the hospital, but going home in a few days. I know they have the autoalert option and the medication dispensing system.

Does anyone have any experience with this company or suggest others?

I would suggest the watch if you are worried about it being a choking hazard.

The other day we ordered the medi alert service for Mom. After having the representative explain how the service works the representative Susan handed me the necklace and asked me to pull it apart. While explaining that a safety alert has been issued from the FDA for a device worn around the neck that enables the users to push a button to summon emergency assistance to their homes because it poses a choking hazard resulting in serious injury or death.

I'm not sure what lifeline has but ADC has a attractive clear beaded cord. I did pull it apart with little efford and it did break. Susan was so informative and concerned. Infact she left 2 extra cords in the event one does break. She also suggusted that while sleeping to have Mom take the pendant off and wear the wrist button. So now during the day Mom wears the necklace and when sleeping wears the wristband. Now I know that an incident like this will no occur here. Hope this helps you all including lifeline. I'll leave you all a link for ADC.

I think this is a great service. I've answered several "welfare check" calls at work where elderly people fell in their home and neighbors have noticed newspapers stacking up. None of them had anything like this, and I believe it would have gotten help there sooner.
