I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism by accident. Last week, I went to a doc in the box for treatment of something completely unrelated. Blood was drawn for a CBC panel and sent off to a lab. A few days later, I was called with this unexpected diagnosis. It was unexpected because I was not told that anything other than a CBC would be run. At any rate, I'm glad that this problem was caught.
Looking back on the health problems I've been experiencing, the diagnosis makes sense. I've experienced almost every symptom associated with an underactive thyroid but only had each symptom treated individually, if at all, while the underlying cause was left untreated. Over the past few years, I had began to accept that the extreme fatigue and depression (among numerous other problems) I was experiencing were just part of who I was and something I would have to deal with for the rest of my life. Now I'm hoping that I will return to 'normal' with proper treatment.
Anybody else have experience with hypothyroidism? Has therapy helped you return to normal?
Your regular doctor needs to run a complete thyroid panel. And you need to see a thyroid specialist. One TSH value does not tell the story. I was convinced for 30+ yrs that I had hypothyroidism but it was really hyperthyroidism. I, too, thought I had most of the symptopms. What I didn't know is that the symptoms overlap so much!
I agree that you need a complete panel done; however, it is very difficult to find a thyroid specialist. Make sure that your family doctor is supportive because you will rely on him/her. As someone who has had radiation treatment, I can tell you that you need to eat a healthy diet, exercise, and get enough sleep. Keep stress to a minimum. Your dosage of meds can change daily so you really need to be in tune with your body and be in communication with your doctor. Watch your blood pressure. As you can see, you are really just taking care of yourself and you will be doing all of this for the rest of your life. Good luck and it does get better. Keep a good attitude.
Go online and google it find out as much as you can. Find out the values in the test ranges that are for now not 10 yrs ago and make sure your results fall into that specified range.
Also have a Pernicious anemia test ran it can go along with Hypothyroid it is B-12 deficiency.
And most of all ask questions about everything you dont understand.
Good Luck.
I also agree a full panel of thyroid tests as part do not tell the whole story.
I was diagnosed a number of years ago with hypothyroidism. I take Synthroid and get my bllod drawn a few times a year to make sure that level is adequate. I was also diagnosed by accident. My ob/gyn did blood work on a yearly exam and called me and told me. One weird thing I noticed is if I need a higher dosage than I am on I start itching all over my body.

I have been dealing with Hypothyroidism for about 6 years now. Before being diagnosed, I was tired all the time, my hair was falling out, my feet were dry and cracked, I was depressed and more. I have been on Levoxyl and it did take a while to get the dosage regulated but have felt amazing ever since it did get regulated. I did gain some weight before I was diagnosed but am working on that as well.
Yes, you will feel better and the fatigue and depression should go away. Feel blessed that it was diagnosed as if left untreated the alternatives are not good.
l-tyrosine - 1000 mg 3 times a day
3-4 tablespoons of coconut oil a day
increase organic iodine
Although I totally am for alternative. I do not recommend self medicating for hypothyroidism. If you are Hypothyroid it affects everything in your body and can really affect your heart.
I would also like to add that Iodine deficiency in this country is extremely rare.
Also if you are pregnant taking Iodine and getting more than you need can cause irreversible damage to the baby!
I know as a young adult I had very minor hypothyrodism. Not even enough to be treated as it was still producing enough but working harder then normal. I did take a medication but had horrible side effects. It really scared me so I got a second opinion and the second Dr. said I really didn't need medication at the time. Today, many, many years later I feel depressed and tired. I am also having some hair loss and unusually dry skin. I am waiting for my new health insurance and then I plan on making an appointment for a complete physical. I suppose over the years my thyroid may not be producing enough now. It would be wonderful to feel good again. Thanks for giving me some hope here with all the stories. I had about given up and figured it was just some form of depression that I was going to have from now on....
