Im 56 and just broke both legs, 5 ribs and skull frcture in a motorcycle accident June 9, 2013. My Harley hit a guard rail and trees. Airlifted to trauma unit. On a ventilator and drug-induced coma. Three fractures (one compound) and about two inches of femur shattered in one leg, broken ankle on the other leg. Had surgery - plates in my face, titanium parts screwed into left ankle and two titanium rods in other leg where they took my knee apart to put one rod from knee to ankle. Was trying to walk two weeks later but they had a fit! Said I would ruin the surgery. Put me in a bed I couldn't get out of. Was in the hospital three weeks and on my back at home for two months. But now 8 months later I can walk almost like before, but have a lot of pain... my knee hurts like hell and I think the screws are coming out... Went back to work September 5.
Telling your friend that her boss can't fire her, is actually a pretty mean thing to do. Her boss most certainly CAN fire her, if she is unable to perform the job for which she was hired. Her boss has to make what's known as "reasonable accommodations" for anyone who is legally disabled.
Getting the legal disability label involves paperwork, not just showing up to work with crutches.
And even then, if she's hired to drive a car, then the boss has to make "reasonable accommodations" that allow her to continue driving a car. He does -not- have to give her a different job that doesn't involve driving. That's not what "reasonable accommodations" means. He is also not responsible for buying her or providing her with a handicap-accessable vehicle, because that isn't considered a "reasonable" accommodation. He can buy her a booster seat if she's too short, or a bigger rear view mirror if her neck is stuck in a weird position - or allow her to install her GPS in the vehicle if she is memory impaired - for example. Those are "reasonable" accommodations.
