I've been bleeding from a surgery opening to let it drain because of a boil. I have this weird smell and wondering if it's the blood or pus coming from the boil?

Thanks, John

Hi John. You are probably smelling the pus (infection) from the boil...they do have a very unpleasant odor. Blood does have a smell but MOST people don't notice it unless it is in very large quantities. To me blood has a sickening sweet odor and it is one you will never forget.

My doctor wants me to take a shower to clean off the blood but it's hard for me to see my blood drain down the shower drain. It reminds me of the movie PSYCHO.

Well the body holds about 4 liters of blood. So two of the large soda containers is a visual reference.

The smell is the pus and stuff.

Someone told me at the hospital the body has one gallon of blood in it. Is this right?

John

Aw, don't worry about that. Unless you're losing a LOT of blood, your body will replace it faster than you're losing it.

However, if you're still bleeding from surgery after 3 or 4 days, you really need to tell your Doctor.

It's actually closer to 5 liters or quarts.

When you're losing it, it looks like a lot. A litre or quart of blood can cover a HUGE area, especially when it's mixed with water, such as in a shower or bath.

Blood has always smelled coppery to me and it has a coppery taste as well (from dental procedures). Anything rotten-smelling is the infection.

The boil was huge and looked like 2 inches in size. I've been to my doctor today and she took out the old gauze and put some new gauze back in. It was not fun at all. Hurt like hell. Good to know the body makes more blood right away.

P.S. On friday the doctor wants me to pull out the gauze myself and I'm nerves about it bleeding.

John
