Hello all...

I searched a good bit, and didn't find the info I was looking for.

I have a 21 year old brother who is abusing Oxycontins. He's been abusing for probably 2-3 years off and on. I know he's a light drinker and smokes pot as well.

What happens is, he'll get tired of using, and call dad, and come to stay home while he tries to goes through detox or whatever. He stays off for a week or two, maybe longer, then relapses...this cycle has happened 3-4 times now.

I know Oxycontins are deadly. But my question is, how does one actually die from the overdose? Does the drug slow the heartbeat till it stops? Do they pass out and choke on vomit? I want to become more informed to have a serious heart to heart with my little brother.

If there's any other input you can help me with, fire away...i'm hurting badly seeing my brother go through this, he's young, smart, and I don't want him to die.

thanks.

The central nervous system depression results in cessation of breathing. Especially when taken in conjunction with alcohol.

Hell yes he can die. Mixing Oxys with booze will be quickest way to do it too.

He needs to get to a meeting or seek professional help to get off this crap. But HE has to want it.

He needs to be put into a recovery program; but, as noted before, it will only work if he wants to be clean/sober. The reason he would rather go through life with his mind numbed by abusing drugs is what he will have to address and overcome.

It stinks to have an immediate family member who abuses drugs/alchohol. I'd suggest you find a support group to help you deal with the reality of the negative affects it can have on you.

This site looks pretty straight-forward: OXYABUSEKILLS.COM

I assume he is smoking them??

Good luck! You're going to need it AND a lot of help.

thanks for the websites...i've got the skinny on everything to know about the pills.

here's what i'm wanting to do. i want to sit down with my brother, and describe to him what he'll go through as he's overdosing on the pills. i want to tell him in a very detailed way, what his body will go through while overdosing...he may be with friends, i want to know what his friends will see him doing as he is dying from these pills...if nobody else is around, i want him to know what his family will see when they discover his body after dying from an overdose.

i want to paint a picture that will hit a chord, strike some fear in him...

There are a couple of scenarios that could occur in an Oxy/alcohol overdose:
He could simply stop breathing-
He could vomit and choke on it- he would be found covered in vomit and quite often the bowels and bladder release so he would also be covered in urine and feces- such a dignified way to be found by those who love him; the memory of THAT picture will remain in the minds of those who find him.

Oh yeah, also if he is found covered in vomit, feces and urine you can be certain that the EMTs, ER staff and those in the morgue WILL laugh, make jokes and make up a 'nickname' to refer to him buy...great way to go...as a JOKE for those who will care for his body!

Oxycontin is a long acting pain killer so when crushed and snorted it is released quickly and gives a high but very very dangerous to be used in such a manner. Never ever split a tablet because you will be releasing the long acting mechanics of the drug....this is where the huge danger among other things comes in.

There is no "one way" you will die if addicted to OC you could be high and step into traffic and get hit by a car. You might die from also taking Vicodan and get a Tylenol overdose which is contained in Vicodan. You might die from CNS shut down or you might die from choking to death or you might not die, but, for many of us our lives are dedicated to staying alive so it isn't an ok to do this for me at all
