I find this a bit strange. I have an appointment with a shrink who wants a $150 deposit two days in advance of my even seeing him! I find this highly unusual and not necessarily a good sign. I can see not accepting personal checks and wanting them to clear before seeing someone. But a debit or credit card would be instantaneous, wouldn't it? Something isn't right here. Opinions? Thanks in advance.
It is not unusual for psych docs to do that if your insurance doesn't cover. Just make sure you have paperwork showing you paid a deposit and what it's for ect...
Doesn't your insurance cover some mental health?
Also, the office may not be set up to take cards.

Yes, it does, but he is out of network so he issues a superbill and I submit for reimbursement. What I take issue with is his wanting payment 48 hours in advance. If I show up with a debit or credit card, I am good for the money. I don't think this is a good sign.
I believe he's been burned and is taking measures to insure payment, I wouldn't take it personally.
It's the business part.
Did you ask him?
There are many instances that a debit or credit card are not an absolute - meaning 2 days sounds reasonable for his office to clear the card even if it's a debit.
With this doubt going on will you be able to have a relationship with the doc?
You need to separate the business end of it from the therapy part. It sounds like it's his policy and not directed at you.

Doesn't sound like a positive way to start therapy which requires mutual trust. I would find someone else, someone who you like and trust.
