DENVER, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- A former patient at a Department of Veterans Affairs hospital in Denver is suing the federal government over a clamp left in his body by surgeons.

Richard Kellar said in his $15 million federal lawsuit surgeons at the Denver VA Medical Center left a clamp inside his body after an Aug. 30, 2005, open heart procedure, KUSA-TV, Denver, reported Wednesday.

Weird. I just discovered in an unrelated X-ray a month ago that I have a surgical clamp inside me. Only surgery I have ever had is an appendecotomy 9 years ago at a private hospital. Not sure if it was left in intentionally or by accident. Maybe I should look into this for myself?

Oh, please...this sort of mistake can happen at any hospital. It never should, regardless of the type of facility...there needs to be more oversight/better records kept about medical mishaps. Many of them go unreported.

Surgical CLAMP or CLIP....big difference.

Surgical CLIPS, which look like small staples folded over on xray are used ALL THE TIME in surgery. They are used to close off vessels that are too big for cautery or to avoid cautery near delicate structures. They aren't removed and are meant to be left behind.

Most likely you have clips in place.

Whoops. I feel stupid. After this post, I pulled out the x-ray report - surgical clip. Makes me feel better at least.

No need to feel stupid....you shouldn't be expected to know what they are and people are often surprised when I point the clips out to them on xray.

The universal response is nearly always....Are those things supposed to be in there?
