I think they should have an ad campaign, with some tv spots and posters in pediatricians offices, departments of health, fliers given out at day cares and schools, helping inform parents of frequently choked on foods and prevention. It would seem like common sense- but I had to tell my mother in law what foods my kids could/could not have, and told her no grapes or hotdogs unless they were cut up small and not in rounds, and no hard candy or nuts. She thought I was crazy, until she saw a show on tv talking about how easily kids can choke. I knew because my sister nearly choked on a hard candy when she was 5. I don't think requiring companies to put warnings on packaging really makes much difference. You ld have to put warnings on so many items, and how do you label grapes? =)

No one wants to see anyone die for crying out loud, c'mon. So when is the best time to discuss it? When it's got people's attention or when it's no longer on anyone's minds? We can pretend all day long or play games with it but that's not going to accomplish a thing. What it comes down to is common sense. Too bad they can package that.
Hot dogs always scared me when my kids were little and I always cut them up. Marshmallows scared me too, and hard candy. My kids never did choke on those however but my son choked on a bite of apple and that was scary until he coughed it out. And one of my friends knew of a boy who actually died after choking on bologna. Sometimes it doesn't even matter what shape the food is. It's always tragic.
Maybe I'm being a little bit harsh here, but anyone who can't figure out how to sufficiently chew up a hot dog before swallowing it does the gene pool a favor by choking on it.

Well, as a matter of fact, I was just thinking it comes down to teaching children to chew their food well even after it's cut up but when they're that little it's also a matter of trial and error, sometimes a tragic one. Nothing to do with intelligence at that age.

Who is "they?" The government?
You know, we CAN'T be protected from everything which might hurt us and more we demand government save us, the less free we are.

You can literally choke on anything. Nothing you put in your mouth is "safe," so where do we stop? Would we have the government mandate that food providers pre-chew it for us? Will all our foods have to come in a tube, reduced to paste like the astronauts used to eat?

Holy smokes Pixar!!!
No, haven't seen that, but I do remember a Mad Magazine story years ago. In it, American's got lazy, ate too much, began using what we would now call a Segue and lost the use of their legs. Eventually, they all turned into round-bottom dolls and we an easy "pushover" for some lanky Chinese communists.
