I suppose this could be a medical question, but it seems really minor and will probably never be a problem?

If your toe aches, it's a problem. I've known people who have had pain in their toes and people who have had a problem with thick toenails. My father happened to have painful toes and thick nails. He went to a Podiatrist every few months. The guy pretty much just clipped his nails and grind them down.
Have you ever injured that toe? Sometimes when you injure something when you're young, it comes back to haunt you years later. Ask me how I know that.
