Why do People Smoke? I know many people who can't stop. They wish they could. If they are without a cigarette for too long they experience wild mood swings.
Sadly, when many of us started smoking, we did not know of the hazards like we do now. I assume you are from the younger set and have always known of the dangers.
We as a society do tend to be like our families and if you grew up with everyone around you smoking, you really didn't think twice about it, you just joined in.
It was as we learned the hazards and wanted to quit that we really realized how addictive smoking is. It is very hard to quit, I know, i have tried several times, thought I had it licked, after 3 months and suddenly there it was, larger than life and much bigger than me.
My father died of lung cancer, my mom has had a heart attack, I do not want to keep this family tradition going and am trying extremely hard to quit. This is one aspect of my family that will hopefully stop with me as I have taught my children about the hazards and harmful effects of smoking.
It might be too late for me, I don't know, but I do know I will keep trying, I want to see my grandchildren. But, I have made it a lifelong goal to teach my kids to not take up this tradition.
To understand the addiction, choose something that you simply cannot go without, be it soda, some type of food or what have you and just put it down cold turkey and decide to quit it, that will only be a small taste of how hard it is to quit smoking.
It really is like a drug. You need it, you crave it, if you have a bad day it can go to even more crap if you don't get one or make everything better once you take that initial drag. Look at people's obsession with chocolate. The side effects may be different but not the cravings.
it's because smoking makes you look cool and smell great
Smell great????? I've never thought that it smelled great. It smells terrible to me, makes me gag. As to looking cool? You actually look cool NOT smoking. Having something burning hanging from your mouth just looks rather stupid.
Thankfully, in spite of having a parent that smoked, I never started. Liz

It's never too late to quit if you really want to. I quit 11 years ago. i woke up one morning and decided to never have another cigarette. So i quit cold turkey. The first 3 days were the hardest, the withdrawal, but after that, much easier. Once you make it one day at a time to the 3 month point, you should be fine and smooth sailing from then on. Even though you will still dream of it many years after you quit, at least you will only smoke in your dreams.

Thank you for those words of encouragement. I actually did make it to the three month mark, and bang, I started once again. I was so angry at myself, and so weak to start back.
I have not given up the fight, and am still trying to quit.
I am French but am currently in the US since 5 months. I am living with a friend who is student then i discovered how is the college life!
I just would like to tell what i think about this life... all people around me smoke marijuana and all these stuffs... some years ago i smoked too these stuffs but now it disgusts me.
As i read in this topic this is a social thing. It seems like you are not their friend if you don't smoke with them, or because everyone do it you want to do it... to don't be apart of the group.
I am sure that all students don't smoke (fortunately) but all people i know do it even if they are poor and spend all their money for that.
It makes me angry sometimes because there is so much good stuff in life. They need to be high to have fun... i don't! so all i know about college students is that they drink, they smoke... to have fun, because it is "cool". I would like to do something but after all it is their life, their health. I don't try to tell them about how this drug destroy their brain and body because i know that they wouldn't really care... i didn't care when i was in this "period". I know what they feel, but now i am so happy i changed and quit. Maybe they will take conscious about all that one day, like i did, but maybe they will never stop and that is sad for them.
It was my thought of the night. (actually i thought about all that all day because i was working with some of them and they were like all excited about smoking tonight... and after i heard one of them telling me "i need to smoke"...)
addiction addiction...
everyone gets one...
i am to cherry coke and sushi!
Sorry, but especially since the warnings came out, on the very pack of cancer sticks one buys, you have to be crazy to continue.
Smoking is not good; it is not cool. I have read the posts about not being able to quit. There is a difference between not being able to do something, and not WANTING to do something.
It is tough; but it can be done, if the person truly desires it to be so.
most smokers start when they are young and dont have the maturity to realize the consequences. by the time they fully realize the dangers they are hooked and find it too difficult to start. quitting smoking can be as tough as quitting heroin or meth. alot of nervous or mentally ill types tend to smoke also because it seems to calm them. im not calling all smokers crazy though. most of us are addicted to something whether it be smoking, food, religion or collecting things.
