I take Excedrin Migraine. It works great for me but I have to take it as soon as I feel the migraine coming on. If I don't catch it in time, I have to wait it out and I'm throwing up all over the place.

If you suffer from migraines, could you tell me what you use for relief and if anyone here uses Depakote, could you tell me how well it has been working for you and any side affects.

Thanks!
I find drinking a lot of water or staying hydrated, regular exercise and limiting caffine works for me. I would be very reluctant to take Depakote though because one of the side effects is weight gain. I have a friend who was on it and gained 50 plus pounds so the doc stopped the Depakote, but my friend is still trying to lose the weight.

I get about 15 a month and take topamax (was not working that great) and just added in Keppra which is helping. I also take imitrex 100 mg pills and axert when its bad. I cannot eat any white products (rice, potatoes, bread etc) it really triggers them and so does sugar. I can in moderation but I try to stick to whole grain or whole wheat. I have to study labels for aspertame, MSG etc. Its such a pain. Eventually you will find something to lessen them. Good luck.

I was in a car accident ten years ago on June 2. Ever since the accident I've been getting migaines. They still really freak me out! I can sometimes lose partial vision, feeling in my hands and the ability to speak normally. I'm not sure what's been going on lately, but I've had one every day just about for the last week. (I've had countless CT's and MRI's) I've really not found any meds that work, I lock myself in a dark room and ride it out.

You know, I've never really connected the two, but the more I hear/ read about others migraines, the mor I can't help but notice the fact that mine started right after a car accident I had in '97. I suffered blunt head trauma; semi-paralyzed on the right side of my body and lost my speech ability. I'm perfectly fine now... but I've had migraines ever since.

I hope you find something to relieve your pain soon!

Yes, I've suffered from migraines for many years... I get the ones with "aura", where you see flashing lights for about 15-20 minutes. Kind of like an acid trip, LOL.

My first advice (if you haven't done this already) is to get a full diagnosis, to make sure you're actually having MIGRAINES... many people mistake a tension headache for a migraine, and they each require different treatments. Now here's how I treat mine, since I'm allergic to aspirin & most migraine medications - Ibuprofen and caffeine!!! I down a diet pepsi or cup of coffee, along with a few extra-strength tylenols, and they usually subside within the hour. Also helps to lay down in a dark room, with a cool & wet towel over my eyes. Finally, I suggest keeping a food diary, where you write down whatever you've eaten when a migraine hits... I discovered a few triggers in my diet, like dairy & chocolate, and it REALLY helped to cut back on them. Hope you feel better soon!

I too suffer I get maybe one maybe every three to four weeks Dr. had me on Imitrex but it did nothing for me. The only way i can get rid of them is to get to a cool no light quite room and ride them out. My Mom suffer from at a younger age and says they diminished with age. I hope that is my case. But I already consider myself an old fart and yet I still have them.

Could someone please explain how Excedrin Migraine differs from plain, old Excedrin?

It has caffine. No kidding. While caffine can be a trigger of migraine's it also helps in some ways to relieve the pressure.

Caffeine works by constricting the blood vessels, making those vessels return to normal and healthy sizes.

When my husband had a spinal tap (lumbar puncture) they also recommended caffeine and had he developed a headache bad enough, they would have done a caffeine drip. Liz
