I had a doctor laughing and joking at me when he said he thought I had MS (myasthenia gravis). I never went back to him, and it turned out I didn't have MS. Thank goodness.

About ten years ago my sister weighed 425 pounds. Her doctor suggestted smoking cigarettes to help her get the weight off. If that sounded silly, he also suggested she should smoke full flavored cigarettes like Marlboro Reds because "light" cigarettes will make one hungry. UGH !!...and oh yes, cigarette smoking would "help" her bipolar disorder too. No she didn't take his advice.

Soon after that my sister had joined Weight Watchers and today she weighs 175 pounds.

It is a fact that unfortunately many people have no knowledge of medicine standards in many places around the world (just a clarification, I mean this world, mine and the one where people who post in this thread talking about medical mistakes/misdiagnoses live).

About thirty years ago, I had a bad flu or cold that resulted in a very bad sore throat. Then I started losing a lot of weight and got shaky hands (tremors). After a thyroid test, I was diagnosed with acute hyperthyroiditis, overactive thyroid. Inderol brought it under control.

I was told I had three choices: to stay on the medication all my life, have my thyroid surgically removed or have it destroyed with radiation.

I had decided on the medication, and after a while I started wondering if the flu or virus I'd
had might not have affected my thyroid (even though the specialist told me no), so I decided to stop the Inderol to see what happened. Lo and behold, nothing happened, my thyroid was back to normal. No more weight loss (darn it) and no more tremors.

Thirty years, I still have my thyroid and it continues to test normal. Was told my virus had nothing to do with the thyroid condition but guess that was not so...this taught me to take a 'wait and see' approach to health issues... often times, the body can and does heal itself.

I'm sure they get that all the time and though I'm sure it made you feel better to complain, it certainly didn't ruin their day. However, letting it go to collections has certainly ruined your credit and will make life very difficult for you if you want to do things like buy a car, get a loan etc. The hospital, the doctors, and the people at collections don't care that you think a mistake was made, you can't just utilize expensive services then refuse to pay. How would you like it if you spent 10 years in school and paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to become trained and then someone refused to pay you for your work? You say he was only there for a few minutes, but you should just be grateful it wasn't longer than that and that your daughter didn't need surgery. I hope you've wised up by now and paid the bill, otherwise you are just ruining your chance at a stable financial future and making yourself look pretty bad. I'll admit the hospital's conduct was not becoming but mistakes happen all the time, people are busy and there was obviously a mix-up. It isn't their job to know the name of every baby in the hospital. The bottom line is that you need to pay your bill, even if you feel like it was uncalled for. If you've tried disputing it already and they still sent it to collections you are only hurting yourself. Get over it and get on with your life.

Hey Socstudent, I'm charging you $10,000.00 because I've had to read your boring posts. If you don't payI will use a collection agency and then your credit rating will be ruined for at least seven years.

So don't question this bill or even argue............. just pay it and move on.

Hahaha, exactly. Well, maybe not the "boring" part, but the rest of it, yeah. Just because some bozo presents you with a bill, that doesn't mean it's valid.

I also had hyperthyroid that went away on it's own after taking medication for awhile, and so did my mother and my aunt.

In my case the doctor did tell me to wean off the medication to see what happened, however, my mother's situation was like yours where she went off the medication on her own.

I took my son (9 yrs old at the time) to the doctor because he had a face rash and I thought he was sick.

The doctor diagnosed eczema and prescribed steroid cream. Because the rash was only one day old, I asked about trying something natural on our own first, and then trying steroid cream if that did not work.

The doctor asked me to come into his office leaving my son alone to worry, and told me that he would no longer be our doctor and we had 30 days to find a new one. This was a total surprise as he usually worked with us and seemed open to things (or so I thought).

As a side note, I ended up using natural cream on my son's face, and covering his new mattress with an allergy cover, and my son’s rash went away in less than a week. Also, later (because my son has since had other skin issues), two Dermatologists told us that it was good we did not use steroid cream on our son's face. We also found a doctor who we like better.

Not outlandish but amusing:

My pediatrician said I would be tall. I am barely 5'6". That's only a little above average. The pediatrician estimated I would be "at least 5'9", maybe 5'10"."

My OB/GYN said it would be impossible for me to get skinny so I should just try to lose 10% of my body weight instead. At the time I had to lose over 100 pounds to achieve a healthy weight. I lost about 125 lbs...essentially 50% of my weight...and have been at this weight for over a year now.
