Freed was one of several DJ's who began aiming R&B at white adolescent audiences.
Another was George Lorenz, "The Hound." He started out in a daylight station in Niagara Falls, and he had so many kids pressing their ears to the radio to hear him that WKBW a mega-watt station in Buffalo that could be heard as far as Tennessee some nights hired him.
His opening show on WKBW was from the Zanzibar Lounge with Clyde McPhatter (I think) and other R&B stars.
