Id actually say that a majority of Americans can't trace their ancestry until 1880s to 1920.
Maybe those of German and Irish decent can,but i doubt Italians and Jews fought in the civil war.
As usual you're wrong.

Maybe,maybe not.
It is known that a bulk of Italians and Russian came after 1880.
Are you saying most white americans came to the Usa before 1880?
Well I maybe wrong. I'm just going by my area though, and people whom I speak with.
Many coworkers are third and fourth generation Italian.

I don't want to get in the middle of whatever ongoing snit the "as usual" refers to, but if you look at post #64, I did provide some numbers info about Italians and Jews in the Civil War.

And I agree with jerseygal4u that the bulk of Italians came here long after the Civil War. (Don't know much about Russians--most of the Russians I know came here within the past 30 years). Most seemed to have arrived in the early part of the 20th century. Italians weren't even considered to be white by many of those of northern European extraction.

Well, of course I can!

My great-grandparents were babies and had not yet emigrated from Poland or Italy by 1865, but I can still trace my ancestry back that far.

I could, but none of my ancestors fought in the war. My great Uncle Pete did, and my little brother has the musket loader that he carried.

My GG Grandfather on my mothers side was in the civil war. We found his Army discharge and pension papers. He was born in Ireland but his place of residence at the time was Brooklyn, NY. What we can't find out is when he came to the USA and when his son came to Illinois and why.

Wow. You make some wild assumptions.

Sounds like you think "most" Americans are of Italian or Jewish descent. They're not. This map might show you how mistaken you are in your thinking. But do note, there is no indication for "Jewish" on the map, as it's a religion, not an ethnicity.

And just a couple of quotes from the article:

"A World War II ethnic background of the U.S. put the top four backgrounds as 36 million British (English, Scottish, Welsh, Cornish), 32 million German, 29 million Irish, 12 million Italian and 10 million Polish." Not a lot of Italians, are there.

"It is estimated that 53 percent of White Americans are the descendants of colonial ancestors." That's colonial ... forget about Civil War era.

And remember, these are the results of someone answering the question about their ethnicity. Much of my family came in the mid-1600s. That means it was about 12 generations ago. In that generation alone, there are over 8,000 ancestors, and they're from many places. How do I pick one to say that is my ancestry, with any degree of accuracy?
