I know that we trained several thousand political prisoners and wer going to offer them air assistance so they could overthrow Fidel Castro and his communist party. Was this supposed to be a serious attempt? Were they banking on the battle causing some type of uprising? Did we simply not try to invade them ourselves for fear of a Soviet response?
As far as I can remember the gov't (CIA) was anticipating that the locals would help once the Cuban invasion force was landed and the Americans had landed after them.
As far as fearing a Soviet response? If they did have a plan it was never made public. Keep in mind both Fidel and the USSR knew that that the invasion was coming. Was not a good start for Kennedy in the White House.
