Tel Aviv ― It has long been believed that modern man emerged from the continent of Africa 200,000 years ago. Now Tel Aviv University archaeologists have uncovered evidence that Homo sapiens roamed the land now called Israel as early as 400,000 years ago ― the earliest evidence for the existence of modern man anywhere in the world.

Until this "discovery" has been corroborated by independent archaeologists I'll stick with current facts.

I agree with pl but I read the article in USA today and the find is quite compelling. According the USATD's version they are pretty sure the teeth are human.
I find this very interesting as I was once told by an idiot that Africa was NOD.

There's overwhelming evidence that Homo Sapiens emerged from modern day South Africa 200.000 years ago.

400.000 years ago in that area...probably Neanderthal or some descendant of Antecessor.

I might be a bit surprised that the Tel Aviv folks didn't find the origins of "intelligent man".

Wired has an excellent and well measured article on the finds.

I wouldn't be suprised to find out there were coastal civilizations in existence during or even before the last ice age. Any evidence is now gone, washed away by higher coastlines. Likewise, it isn't impossible that modern man arose 400,000 years ago, but I wanna see real evidence too.
