Canada wasn't any kind of nation then. There was no idea of Canadian nationhood in anyone's mind at the time. Most Canadians (as well as over a quarter of Americans) were loyal to the British, and in fact, identified themselves as such (except maybe the French-Canadians). So this would be like CSA invading Maryland to "free" it from the United States.

That wasn't the job of the govt, still isn't. The federal govt was meant to be a small collection of representatives of the states whos main job was to ensure that the states rights were not over run by the federal govt. Unfortunately thats not the way it is anymore & we suffer for it.

If that were true, we would still have the Articles of Confederation. The Constitution would not be necessary.
