Canada wasn't any kind of nation then. There was no idea of Canadian nationhood in anyone's mind at the time. Most Canadians (as well as over a quarter of Americans) were loyal to the British, and in fact, identified themselves as such (except maybe the French-Canadians). So this would be like CSA invading Maryland to "free" it from the United States.

If that were true, we would still have the Articles of Confederation. The Constitution would not be necessary.
