I am a Philadelphian, and the history book I liked was First City by Gary B. Nash. Not everyone likes this history because Nash tries to tell Philadelphia's story in a way that is not only about politicians, generals, the rich, and white people ... in other words the "big wigs" ... but documents the lives of ordinary folks, including women, Blacks, immigrants, etc.
There are several books on Philadelphia's history, just google it.
Something that must be noted is that it did not start with William Penn and his treaty with the Indians. Decades before, what is now Philadelphia was part of the colony of New Sweden. By the time Penn got here there already was a town with at least two generations of Europeans living here. Look it up: Colony of New Sweden.
