The Scottish Kilt was invented by an Englishman. When the British government banned the kilt in 1746 it exempted the Highland regiments in the British army. During the thirty-five years the ban stayed in force, Scots serving in the British army were the only ones who could legally wear kilts.
It's bad enough that the kilt originated with an Englishman, but to make things even worse, bagpipes aren't Scottish either. Dates back to ancient Greece, probably originated in the Middle East.
So I guess it should be The English Kilt. Thomas Rawlinson.
The "Uncle Tom" character in Uncle Tom's Cabin was actually martyr'd as a result of his refusal to reveal the whereabouts of escaped slaves. This, despite the fact that "Uncle Tom" has become a derogatory term for blacks deemed to be "traitors to their race" by other blacks.
Many of the names we call Indian tribes are not what they call themselves. Some are even way off. The Apache being one of the, possibly, more extreme examples as it's a word that either meant "enemy" or "Navajo." (I guess Navajo are an Apachean people, but still...)
One I remember, from Chinese class, is Chinese itself. The word "China" or "Chinese" is not what ethnic Chinese called their people. I don't just mean they have a different language, I mean traditionally it's not even a word like "Chinese." They're "The Men/People of Han" or "The Middle Kingdom/Land people." So something like "Hanrenese" or "Zhongguorian/Middlish" would be closer. I think "China" comes from the name of their first dynasty, Qin pronounced like "Chin", but that's a pretty controversial dynasty to them. My prof, from China, thought we called them that because that's what we called their porcelain.

The term Uncle Tom is not used to describe someone who is a traitor to their race, which Uncle Tom certainly Was Not.. but it is used to describe someone who is accepting of their role in being a salve to their master which Uncle Tom was...
