What would the South be like today if they had won the Civil War? I am aware even if the South did win the war, slavery would eventually cease to exist there. Would it still likely to retain its independence from the USA?
That's a hard one; the antebellum south was a prosperous place, on the backs of slaves. There was also some poverty though; poor folks who could not afford slaves and the myriad ways they contributed to the economy. After the war, the south had to come up with a better way to build their economy. It's safe to say that parts of the south never recovered from the loss of slave labor, and unemployment rates in southern states are still high.

I think in the unlikely event the South won, they might have existed as a separate nation for awhile, but eventually would have been re-absorbed into the Union.

I agree with this.
But the poster who said that the south did not fight over slavery must have missed 7th grade U.S history class....
the same issues that caused the civil war are still present.
the federal government breaks its own laws. rules by might not right. ironically the slogan of lincoln in reverse.
the civil war was not about slavery, a matter of record.
slavery issue was introduced later a brillant political move. but the victor writes history.
the south would be like the relationship of georgia to russia today if they had won.

Well thought out. This surely is how the CSA would proceed if it didn't have the North to guide it.

USA rejects reunification feelers from CSA after initial talks break down over States Rats. USA ambassador advises CSA to ask the French upon leaving.
1990--USA builds colonies in 100 different galaxies and perfects wormhole technology to travel back and forth instantly. CSA invents the Pet Rock and declares Billy Ray Cyrus entertainer of the year. Cuba increases their aid to the CSA to combat hunger.

Weird replies, namely the ones assuming that the states of the Confederacy wouldn't do rational things for its national self-preservation.
1. Just the same as the United States junked the Articles of Confederation after the Revolution, the Confederacy would probably recognize the need for some kind of more powerful central authority, particularly with the United States as the convenient bogeyman on its northern border.
2. Slavery would have ultimately been recognized as economically untenable. How that would have affected the lot of blacks in the South is anyone's guess.
3. If the South had indeed prevailed, that would mean that the long, destructive campaigns of Sherman, et al, would not have occurred. Therefore it's reasonable to believe that cities, rail networks and the region's nascent industry would have been preserved. What's more, assuming that the vital cotton farming industry was not destroyed in the war, the South would have been able to rely on that as a source of capital.
4. The Southern states would have probably wound up carving out their own mini sphere of influence in places such as Cuba and Central America, possibly even annexing large chunks of Mexico after the overthrow of Maximilian. The South and the North might have even had unwritten agreements in place.
5. The Southern states would have played catch up in industrial development. To be sure, the states of the Confederacy would not have caught up with the North, but it almost certainly wouldn't have been content remaining a largely agricultural region. What's more, the location of a large proportion of the country's domestic oil reserves in the South would have put an interesting spin on the future economic development of the North.

Slavery was an issue, but anybody who actually ever read anything about the history of the civil war would know that the main focus of the war was secession. Public schools might teach that it was all about slavery... but it's simply not true. A large portion of the South did not even believe in slavery.
