And that is the problem with picking a VP running mate based solely on how many votes he/she brings to the ticket. JFK was more concerned with getting Southern votes [not an easy task for a Yankee Catholic in the 60's] than he was with the welfare of the country. And sadly not much has changed since then.

He was planning to dump LBJ in '64 in favor of Terry Sanford - who would have been a much better choice.
Sanford was Governor of North Carolina (later US Senator). He was a WW2 hero, attorney, and professor before entering politics. He was moderately liberal (very liberal by Southern standards), an unabashed supporter of civil rights, mildly hawkish, and very friendly with the Kennedys. He would have made a good match in 1964.
It is well known Kennedy wanted no part of a large presence in Vietnam, that was Johnson and McNamara's war.
The idea VP's are picked due to the votes/money they bring regardless of what the person running for President thinks about that person was pointed out in the program West Wing, sometimes the VP pick is for assassination insurance, too bad the war machine liked Johnson better.
So, where did this amazing scoop come from, after lying hidden for 47 years? Well, it was uncovered by the crack supermarket tabloid investigative journalist who, in the past few days, came up with a byline for these zingers, too:

What I find odd is the fact that anyone could be so obtuse as to actually think that simply being a resident of a state as large and diverse as Texas should be an automatic disqualifier for becoming POTUS.

You're kidding, right?
Look, LBJ had a lot of faults as a person/politician - he was crude, pushy, profane. But you gotta look at his accomplishments as a legislator in Congress, he was very masterful at cajoling, begging, threatening and sweet-talking other legislators to get their votes and getting things done.
A lot of the Great Society social programs were passed under his watch, including the civil rights legislation, and Medicare.
Unfortunately, the Vietnam War has tended to cloud the public perception and his legacy. Read Robert Caro's books on LBJ for a good look at the man.
As far as Texas politicians are concerned, George W. Bush and current Governor Rick Perry couldn't carry LBJ's boots and saddle.
