I was editing a tape of a broadcast of World at War, the episode Genocide. Very quiet, very stark and little embellishment. The pictures tell the story. He went through highschool and took all the history you had to. He'd 'heard' of it, and I looked at him and he's sitting there with tears streaming down his cheeks and says, I never say this, didn't know anyone could be do horrible.
We must never quit reminding ourselves of the depths of depravity human being are capable of or we fall for the comfort of believing they never will.
Just like the footage of the war, especially stuff like the island landings. I saw something of it last night, trying to find something of interest on TV. I thought about how somewhere out there Dad was, and what horrible stuff he saw and how he hated war and guns and violence the rest of his life, and understood why he never tried to talk about it.
People don't want to see uglyness, but they have to to really believe it can be.
