Is it possible New Orleans received a lot of cultural influence from NYC in the earlier 20th Century, and in turn NYC received a lot of cultural influence from Chicago? White people in New Orleans have an NYC-like accent, and New Orleans is very ethnically diverse like NYC, and unlike most of the South. NYC today feels a lot like Chicago to me (like Chicago was first), but I can't explain why. Much of Virginia reminds me of the northern half of New Jersey. Perhaps Yankees invested a lot in Virginia to help it recover from the Civil War? Houston also has a similarity to Philadelphia (and parts of NYC) which I can't really explain.
