I am writing the first book about 19th century rotunda panoramas. These were the biggest paintings in the world, 50x400=20,000 square feet, housed in their own rotundas which were 16-sided polygons. Chicago in 1893 had 6 panorama companies and 6 panorama rotundas.

I think that is a great topic and would be a beautiful book. Please post here again when published.

There was an extensive mural,(3miles in length! I just searched online), which depicted life along the ante-bellum Mississippi River but I do not know if that was exhibited on a rotunda.I believe it was called a cyclorama then. Later destroyed. Did not survive the 19th century.

There is a nice one inside a specially built chamber in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It depicts Versailles ans was painted by Vanderlyn.

It would appear that others have beaten you to that "first book" status.

Amazon.com: The Painted Panorama: Comment Bernard: Books

You may still write the best book, the most comprehensive book, the most enjoyable book, but "first" is no longer on the table.

I've seen the one at Gettysburg as well as the Atlanta Cyclorama, both really cool experiences.

Good luck with your book.
