.......saw the episode on CSPAN. Didn't know he was a staunch advocate of civil rights. I mean, a really ahead of his time supporter! And his argument was on point: That fighting imperialism abroad and failing to deal with racial issues at home makes us look hypocritical.

Wendell Willkie! I don't believe that I've ever seen a discussion on Wendell Willkie! Now I must go and read about Mr. Willkie.

Moderate/liberal New York Republican, along the lines of Dewey, Ike, and Rockefeller.
He got the 1940 GOP nomination despite never having held elected office because the general consensus was "anybody but Taft" due to Taft's isolationism.

I know who Wendell Willkie is, I just never had a reason to study him in any depth.

Just looking at the chronology makes for interesting speculation about a Willkie Presidency. Had he somehow managed to win the 1940 election, he might very well have tried to steer the country in a different direction than Roosevelt. (He also wouldn't have completed his term--he died in 1944--which also would have been interesting, considering that the war was still being fought at that time).

If you go to the (world class) WW1 musuem in Kansas City, you would see a large display area dedicated to the suffragist movement with the same theme. They had news articles, posters and whatnot pointing at the hypocrisy of going overseas to fight for "rights" while denying women the vote at home.
