No, there was absolutely no chance of "re-absorption" into the British Empire, nor was that England's strategic objective, nor was that the reason for US declaring war (to defend it's independence). Defeat maybe (it ended in stalemate), but that would have simply meant treaty with terms (maybe loose some land to Canada, pay retribution, etc.).

Re-absorption? I don`t necessarily see that as a bad thing.

I think the worst may have been the 1930s. Famine, dustbowl, depression, and assorted disruptions to family viability plus possible upcoming war.

hobos searching for work and leaving families behind to live as best they could. Grapes of Wrath events. just hard times. and pervasive.
