PACIFIC theater was mostly fought on water and islands...not nearly as destructive as the European battlefront that devastated so many countries

I am a fan of the Pacific War, but I don't have an answer to your question. And yes, all my family members who served in WWII, served in the USN in the Pacific. There are so many excellent books on the Pacific War, about specific air and sea and air/sea battles from both the US and Japanese sides.

As a kid I started with Samuel Elliot Morisson's multi-volume series, History of US Naval Operations in WWII, which includes both theatres. Good books about Naval leaders are The Admirals, Walter Borneman, and there re several good books about Admirals Ernest King, Chester Nimitz, Raymond Spruance, Marc Mitcher, Frank Feltcher, etc.Good books about sea battles are Neptune's Inferno, by Hornfisher (anything by him is great), Pacific Crucible and Conquering the Tide by Toll, Ship of Ghosts by Hornfisher, A Battle History of the Imperial Japanese Navy by Dull, etc, etc. I could go on for ages.
