And there in lies the problem. True conspiracies are never meant to come into the light of day but to endlessly fold in on themselves. I can't think of one that fits your criteria.

Given the US government's notorious inability to keep secrets, it is extremely unlikely that any of the wild and wacky "conspiracy theories" have any truth to them. The only way to keep a secret is if only two people know about it, and one of them is dead. "Conspiracy theories" are made up by the same numb minds that want to believe in Martians, the Yeti, and that the Earth is only 5,000 years old.

As a result of military service, and afterward working for DoD/DARPA as a private contractor directly involved in attempting to make sure that secrets stayed secret, I have first-hand knowledge of just how difficult this is. Embarrassing things like Watergate, and the Iran/Contra affair (for which Ollie North became the sacrificial lamb) tend to be exposed to the public eye sooner or later. The truth is usually much simpler than the 'conspiracy theorists' would like to believe.

Two things have been mentioned in replies here- The terrorist hijackers (Sept. 11) were actually fairly stupid and inept in their preparation and execution. They could have learned everything they needed to know about flying the planes by buying a used PC for cash and a $50 copy of Microsoft Flight Simulator instead of taking the time and expense to attend flight school. More effort and attention to detail in the execution would have yielded better results (from their point of view).

The Iraq invasion- there actually *were* WMDs in Iraq, but these were transported to Syria (and the Syrian government [eventually] turned them over to the US). What most people do *not* know, is that an international nuclear regulatory agency was in possession of the plans and details of an Iraqi facility that was capable of producing as many as ten nuclear warheads per year (I'm not giving away a secret here, the information was publicly available on the internet prior to the invasion). The construction of this facility was nearly complete and about to go into production. This was one of the primary reasons for pounding the snot out of Iraq sooner rather than later. As it was, the powers that be putzed around for so long that the Iraqi government had time to [try to] hide the WMDs in Syria.

You'd be far better off worrying about the things that few people are talking about, like the creeping rot of Communism/Socialism that is infecting the country (McCarthy would be spinning in his grave), instead of who shot JR...er, I mean JFK, or the Masons and Tri-lateral Commission, or the extremely ridiculous notion of the US government being involved in crashing jets into the World Trade Center.

Another very effective tactic is to invite into your conspiratorial group persons from the outside that are not aware of it's goals and are never admitted to any of it's inner circles or told of the group's true agenda. These persons serve as cover, deflecting criticism and scrutiny. The Council on Foreign Relations has used this tactic for decades, with perhaps many if not most of it's membership unaware of the CFR goals. For example, many conservatives are CFR members. Men such as Dick Cheney, John Bolton, John McCain, and Newt Gingrich, all CFR members, are hardly what we can call those working toward a one world globalist society. The late William F. Buckley, a conservative icon, was a member, so things do get murky, and provide those debunking the CFR conspiracy theory a talking point.

Why did the CIA write the crash investigation report for the jet that crashed off Long Island? I thought that NTSB was responsible for investigating downed airliners?

If what you say is true, then we would now know Colonel Sander's secret recipe, and what happened to Jimmy Hoffa, and who the satanic cults are that have been responsible for thousands of cattle mutilations on every continent for nearly a century. People who keep secrets of the inner workings in government are no different from people in any other crime syndicate.

Default well ..one way to think of it ....

Any conspiracy of any real significance will be shielded in a number of ways including diversion and discrediting of anything even approaching the actual essence of that which is so covertly being done. In a sense, if you think you perceive such an operation is in progress, chances are you are looking at the distraction rather than the core nature of the event. Along the lines of Hannah Ahrendt's analogy of an onion to describe the nature of a totalitarian regime, where there are progressive layers beginning with the outer skin, visible to all with successive layers beneath(behind) which become progressively more hidden as they get closer to the actual core(power base/true intent) one must assume that anything "openly" in view of the populace is either diversion or trivial. For instance, the whole issue of is there an illuminati? Are they the driving force behind western society? Well they may been at one time but at this point in that they have become even topic of conversation they have become irrelevant as any true power behind the group has recessed itself further back into the shadows,"revealing" the illuminati with the intent of throwing off the suspicion of any greater forms of hidden power structures, thus better assuring their own continuancy of power and control.
just a thought....

The Salem Witch Trials- Was that not a conspiracy theory? The entire town believed that these women were witches until the accusers came out after the women were hung and admitted they lied.

Lance Armstrong- A cancer survivor. There was no way he could be juicing up with steroids, right? For years, he denied it and anyone who spoke out within the cyclist community was "destroyed" by Lance and their career was over. The general public believed Lance over these handful of a few loony French cyclists out to bring him down. Recently, it all unraveled and now the truth comes out.

I'm sure you can find other examples, perhaps not on the scale of a 9/11 or JFK. In my mind, there is no question that JFK was a massive cover up. We just don't know how they actually did it or why. It is clear that the "facts" presented by the government are a total joke.
