Heck, just look up Merriam Webster's definition of "assassinate":

1): to injure or destroy unexpectedly and treacherously

2): to murder (a usually prominent person) by sudden or secret attack often for political reasons

I don't see Yamamoto's killing fitting neither interpretation.

Hmmmm, let's see. Yamamoto was murdered by a sudden and secret attack.

And you are unable to see how this fits with:

Well, keep looking, you'll find it eventually I suspect.

He was an enemy combatant killed during a military mission. If that is your definition of murder, then most of the combatants in the war were murdered.

Consider is Reynard Heydrich's demise straightforward wartime killing or assassination?

The ill fated British commando mission to kill Rommel was an assassination attempt?

How is a (non POW) soldier "murdered" by enemy soldiers during a war?

Murder stops being murder during war time? I thought the whole idea of a war was to go out and murder the enemy.

Neutralize the enemy. Otherwise there wouldn't be an Italy, Japan or Germany today.

Gee, and all this time I thought murder = unlawful killing of someone.

Oh....so because al-Qaeda declared a Jihad against the Great Satan, that legalized the murders on 9/11?

War is murder....accompanied by formalities which serve as the justification.

To all........you are still confusing the deed and the morality of the deed. If I shot you dead because you raped my daughter, that is still me murdering you. If I shot you dead because my country is at war with yours, I have still murdered you. That my country declares my actions legal...does that mean that you are any less murdered? Were my actions legal in your mind? You do take great comfort from this as you die?

War is when lots of people are murdering lots of other people, all in the name of some national goal.

So again....does the nature of the goal alter the nature of the act? Or does it just alter the morality with which we decide to view the act?
